Guimaras is a Philippine island south of Panay .

The island lies to the south of the Guimaras Strait between the large Philippine islands of Panay in the north and Negros in the east. In the southeast, there are smaller islands, the largest is called Inampulugan .

The island of Guimaras forms the main part of the Guimaras province of the same name . In the waters of the island lies the Taklong Island National Marine Reserve , which was established in 1990 and is in the area of ​​the Nueva Valencia municipality .

The capital is Jordan in the northwest of the island, opposite the coast of Panay with the province of Iloilo .

In the meantime, the island and the neighboring city of Iloilo City form a metropolitan region called Metro Iloilo-Guimaras .

On August 11, 2006, the Filipino tanker Solar 1 sank , whose cargo of around 2,100 tons of bunker oil flowed into the sea and caused an environmental disaster.
