Baras is a Filipino municipality in the island province of Catanduanes . It has 12,848 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census) who live in 29 barangays . The community is described as partially urban and belongs to the fifth income bracket of the communities in the Philippines. Baras is located about 377 km southeast of the capital of the Philippines Manila and 17 km east of the provincial capital Virac . The community is located on the east coast of the island, on the Philippine Sea .

Baras has a hilly to mountainous topography , in which the nature and water protection area Catanduanes Watershed Forest Reserve with its extensive rainforest stands is located.

The climate of the island of Catanduanes is classified as Type II, with no pronounced dry or rainy season, the heaviest rainfall falls from October to December. The community is located within the Typhon Belt in the Philippines.
