Jorge Pelicano (* 1977 in Figueira da Foz ) is a Portuguese documentary filmmaker and television cameraman .

Life

Pelicano studied communication and public relations at the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda and is working on his PhD at the University of Coimbra . First and foremost, he is a cameraman and reporter , as a freelancer in numerous productions for the television station SIC . However, his name only became known to the general public in Portugal through his documentaries, which were broadcast several times on television and distributed as DVDs .

His documentary Ainda Há Pastores? ( "Is there still shepherd?") About the hard life of the shepherds in the untouched nature of the Serra da Estrela gained after the publication in 2006 when DocLisboa -Filmfestival 2009 two awards and the CineEco -Filmfestival in Seia three. The film received a total of 14 national and international awards, including the Green Award in Turin, the most important award for environmental films. His next film in 2009 also dealt with the depopulated interior and again showed impressive images of nature, but the tone here is combative. The ambiguity of the title Pare, Escute, Olhe (“Halt, Höre, Sehe”, an old traffic sign warning people to be careful at level crossings in Portugal) already contains an appeal. The film documents the disappearance of the Linha do Tua small-gauge railway in a still almost untouched nature and shows both the history and the various motivations of all those involved, as well as the consequences for the declining and aging population of the catchment area. This film also wins awards at various festivals in Germany and abroad. And the film is again enjoying great popularity among the public and in the first half of 2010 it was one of the most watched films in Portugal.
