Norra Södermanlands Järnväg (NrSlJ), also called Eskilstunabanan , was a standard-gauge railway line in Sweden . It opened in stages between 1895 and 1899. Between 1994 and 1997 it was largely replaced by the newly built Svealandsbana . Since then, individual sections have still been used by freight and museum traffic, the rest has largely been dismantled.

history

The Norra Södermanlands Järnväg was built relatively late. The two original endpoints of the line, the industrial cities of Södertälje and Eskilstuna , had been connected to the Swedish railway network since 1862 and 1877 and could also be reached by ship. The city of Strängnäs in between also had good steamboat connections over the Mälaren. From the 1870s onwards, plans for a railway line were drawn up several times, but not implemented for economic reasons. It was not until 1890, on the initiative of Carl Alexanderson , landowner and owner of ironworks in Åkers styckebruk and Stålboga , that a concession was applied for to build a standard-gauge line from Nybybruk via Eskilstuna, Eklången, Stålboga and Åkers styckebruk to Södertälje and was granted on May 22, 1891. Branch lines to Strängnäs, Mariefred and Eskilstuna norra were also included in the concession .

Norra Södermanlands Järnvägsaktiebolag

The foundation of the railway company Norra Södermanlands Järnvägsaktiebolag took place on September 30, 1891 and in November of the same year construction began on the Södertälje – Eskilstuna – Nybybruk line. On September 30, 1895, the line was officially opened by the Swedish King Oskar II .

Extension after Mälarbaden

Between May 1899 and June 1900 the line was extended beyond Nybybruk to Mälarbaden .

Changes to Södertälje

Between 1916 and 1922 the course of the Västra stambanan near Södertälje was changed. In the course of these measures, the previous connecting station of NrSlJ near Saltskog was closed and a new connection was established at the newly built Södertälje södra station (today Södertälje hamn).

Nationalization and electrification

In the 1920s the economic situation of the railway deteriorated to such an extent that bankruptcy was imminent. Therefore, the NrSlJ was nationalized on July 1, 1931 and incorporated into the state railway company SJ . The Södertälje – Eskilstuna section, including the connecting railway to Mariefred, was electrified in 1936 under state control.

From 1936, the railway company Trafikaktiebolaget Grängesberg – Oxelösunds Järnvägar (TGOJ) took over the freight traffic on the Eskilstuna C – Nybybruk section. Leased from 1965, and in 1968 the TGOJ finally bought this section of the route. In 1998 the section was taken over again by the state together with the rest of the TGOJ rail network.

Shutdowns

Even before the nationalization, on October 11, 1921, passenger traffic on the branch line Södertälje – Södertälje uthamn was shut down. Further closures of branches after the nationalization also initially only affected passenger traffic:

date Route section length Type of traffic Remarks
10/11/1921 Södertälje C - Södertälje uthamn 4 km passenger traffic
07/01/1931 Eskilstuna S - Eskilstuna N 2 km passenger traffic
01/01/1933 Eskilstuna C - Nybybruk 10 km passenger traffic
01/01/1933 Nybybruk - Painting Baths 4 km Total traffic
09/27/1969 Läggesta - Mariefred 4 km Total traffic since 1966 narrow-gauge Östra Södermanland Järnväg
1979 Eskilstuna S - Eskilstuna C 1 km Freight transport
03/10/1983 Åkers styckebruk - Strängnäs 15 km passenger traffic
08/15/1991 Åkers styckebruk - Strängnäs 15 km Total traffic

The Svealandsbana

Towards the end of the 1980s, the winding route turned out to be too slow to be able to compete with road traffic, especially for commuting to Stockholm. In addition, the largest city along the route, Strängnäs, was only connected by a 15-kilometer branch line. It was therefore decided to build a new line via Strängnäs between Södertälje and Valskog on the Mälarbana . To make room for construction, the Södertälje – Eskilstuna section was closed for three years in January 1994. In June 1997 the Svealandsbana was put into operation.

Current condition

The Södertälje – Taxinge Näsby and Åkers Styckebruk – Eskilstuna sections were shut down and dismantled in the course of the construction of the Svealandbana. The section Taxinge Näsby – Läggesta was handed over to the museum railway company Östra Södermanlands Järnväg (ÖSlJ) together with the branch line Läggesta – Mariefred .

The only remainder of the NrSlJ still used in regular freight traffic is the Hällbybrunn – Nybybruk section. The route section is also used for special steam trips.

The Grundbo – Åkers styckebruk section of the former branch line to Strängnäs was reversed, so to speak, and it has now become a freight branch line to Åkers styckebruk.
