Carl Johan Jehander

Carl Johan Jehander (born May 11, 1833 in Färgaryds socken , Jönköpings län ; † January 9, 1911 in Ängelholm ) was a Swedish engineer , mill owner , industrialist and member of the Reichstag .

Jehander worked as a builder and was responsible for building about 200 miles of railway lines in Sweden. He was a politician and a member of the First Chamber of the Swedish Parliament. In 1874 he founded the company with Malcolm Jehander Jehander that a part of since 1999 , HeidelbergCement is.

Life and works

Carl Johan Jehander was born in Långaryd in Jönköpings län in 1833 , where his parents owned a small farm. He lost his father at the age of twelve. His mother then married Jehander, the builder of the dock and harbor authority in Malmö , whose name he adopted.

Jehander worked on construction sites during the day, after which he attended evening technical school. In 1858 he passed his master builder exam.

At first Jehander was busy expanding the port facilities in Hälsingborg . After that, all bridge structures in Hälsingborg – Landskrona – Eslövs Järnväg were transferred. The next order included the construction of the bridges on the Södra stambana between Malmö and Nässjö .

Between 1867 and 1870 he was the builder of the connecting railway ( Swedish Sammanbindningsbanan ) through Stockholm and built bridges on the Nordvästra stambana in Värmland . He was responsible for the construction of the Stockholm – Västerås railway on the Stockholm – Västerås – Bergslagens Järnvägar , where he worked on behalf of Ekolsundsbanken.

Between 1870 and 1873 Jehander directed reinforcement work at Vaxholm Fortress and Oscar Fredriksborg Fortress . He was responsible for building the batteries in Vaxholm. Until 1880 Jehander carried out construction work on the docks of Lindholmens varv in Gothenburg and on Galärvarvet in Stockholm.

From the early 1880s, Jehander devoted himself almost exclusively to railway construction. He built railways under contract or on behalf of the state or on behalf of individual companies. He started with the train between Karlberg and Lilla Värtan .

Carl Johan Jehander was the owner of Hörle bruk near Värnamo from 1874 to 1901 , where he ran a sawmill, a pulp mill and a carpentry shop. He also ran sawmills in Smålandsstenar, Unnen and Byarum. His initiative made him an important employer. For his services he received the Merit Medal För nit och redlighet i rikets tjänst and became a Knight of the Wasa Order . From 1894 to 1901 he was a member of parliament and represented Jönköping in the First Chamber. In 1900 Jehander moved to Ängelholm, where he lived until his death in 1911.

Railway construction

Jehander built the following railways:

  • Länna – Norrtälje järnväg opened in 1884 .
  • Parts of the Västkustbana between Hälsingborg and Halmstad as well as Åstorp and Höganäs between 1882 and 1885, Göteborg – Varberg between 1886 and 1888, Hässleholm – Vittsjö and Halmstad – Bolmen between 1887 and 1890 and Trelleborg – Klagstorp between 1889 and 1891.
  • Between 1887 and 1889 the narrow-gauge railway line Halmstad-Bolmen was commissioned by Halmstad-Bolmens Järnvägsaktiebolag .
  • Between 1885 and 1888 he was responsible for building the connection between Karlskrona station and the Royal Shipyard with a tunnel under the city.
  • In the same period he built the Lund – Kävlinge railway with the large bridge over the Lödde å . For Östra Skånes Järnvägar he was responsible for the construction of the Hästveda – Karpalund and Hörby – Tollarp lines. Jehander also built all the bridges on the Varberg – Borås line .
  • Between 1887 and 1892 Jehander built the routes Falun-Rättvik, Rättvik-Mora and Mora-Orsa in Dalarna . He built the southern part of Skåne – Smålands järnväg between Kärreberga and Markaryd between 1891 and 1893, Malmö – Tomelilla between 1892 and 1894 and Uddevalla – Lelången between 1892 and 1895.
  • In the 1890s the routes Hook – Nässjö, Jönköping – Vaggeryd , Reftele – Gislaved , Kalmar – Berga , Kalmar – Torsås and Gullberna – Torsås followed. Dala – Hälsingland Järnvägar and Sala – Gysinge – Gävle Järnvägar were built under his leadership between 1897 and 1900, the Borås – Alvesta line between 1898 and 1901 and Ängelholm – Klippan between 1902 and 1905. Despite this intensive railway construction work, he took over the blasting work for the Karlsborg fortress .
