Vinicius and Tom

Vinicius and Tom ( Portuguese: Vinícius e Tom ) are the official mascots of the 2016 Summer Olympics (Vinicius) and the 2016 Summer Paralympics (Tom) in Rio de Janeiro .

Vinicius and Tom are mythical creatures. Vinicius, a mixture of different animal species, looks like a cat and represents the fauna of Brazil. Tom represents a combination of different forest plants, he symbolizes the Brazilian flora . The yellow and green leaves on Tom's head refer to the national colors of Brazil . The names of the mascots stand for Vinícius de Moraes and Antônio "Tom" Carlos Jobim , who created the world-famous bossa nova title The Girl from Ipanema .

Emergence

After the decision to host the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in October 2009, Luciana Eguti and Paulo Muppet, the founders of the Brazilian animation and design studio Birdo , started designing the mascots. In November 2014, the two figures were presented to the public. The public was asked to vote on the names of the mascots. The choices were Oba and Eba , Tiba Tuque and Esquindim and Vinicius and Tom . Of the more than 320,000 people who voted, around 44 percent voted for Vinicius and Tom by the deadline on December 14, 2014 .

An animated series with the two mascots as the main characters was produced for the Brazilian offshoot of the pay-TV channel Cartoon Network . The series is entitled Vinícius e Tom: Divertidos por Natureza ( German  Vinicius and Tom: Fun in nature ). The 32 episodes are each about two minutes long. The first episode was broadcast on August 5, 2015, exactly one year before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Others

The toy manufacturer Lego presented the Vinicius and Tom figures as a kit in May 2016, adding an Olympic and a Paralympic mascot to its range for the first time.
