Eagle Sam ( Jap. イーグルサム , Īguru Samu ) was the mascot of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , as well as based on it anime - television series that were shown during the year before the Games in Japan. Sam is a bald eagle , a national symbol of the United States, and represents the Olympic motto " Citius, Altius, Fortius ".

Creation of the character, use of the mascot

The LAOOC organizing committee contacted the animation and film studios in the city, from which Walt Disney was eventually selected. Initially considered ideas to take up typical elements of the region - sun, palm trees and seals - were discarded. The bear as the heraldic animal of California was also ruled out, as the bear Mischa was the mascot of the games in Moscow four years earlier . So the choice finally fell on the bald eagle as the symbol of the USA. The design for Sam came from Robert C. Moore , Art Director of the Publicity Art Department at Walt Disney Productions . The appearance of the mascot was designed to be attractive to children. So that the figure could be drawn as a participant in competitive sports, the wings were designed as arms and the feathers as fingers.

The mascot was not only used in pictures, but was also worn as a life-size costume at events. A variety of merchandising products such as plush toys, mugs and t-shirts also appeared.

Content of the series

The detective Sam lives in Olympic Town. One day he is turned into an eagle. Together with his assistant Miss Canary and his brother Gooselan, he no longer only fights against corruption in the police, but also to get his human form back. He travels around the world solving criminal cases. His hat helps him again and again, from which he can draw all kinds of useful things. Often times these are glowing Olympic rings that give him the confidence to solve a problem.

Production and publication

The series was produced in 1983 by Dax International Studio under the direction of Hideo Nishimaki and Kenji Kodama . She was the second to an Olympic mascot after Koguma no Misha of 1979 had already revolved around the Moscow Games. Based on Moore's design, Yoshio Kabashima developed the character design for the television series. The template for the Olympic Town was Los Angeles, the location of the 1984 Games, down to the uniforms of the police. The 51 episodes of the anime were shown by TBS from April 7, 1983 to March 29, 1984 .
