description

Lizzie (English Lizard = lizard ) is a frilled lizard , a species of reptile native to Australia . The frilled lizard is one of the most famous animals on the continent. Lizzie symbolizes the strength, determination and will to win of the participants in the Paralympic Games. Lizzie's collar is designed in green and gold, the national colors of Australia; its shape is based on the outline of the continent. The ocher-colored body of the lizard stands for the color of the country, the desert sand typical of the outback .

The mascot Lizzie was officially introduced to the public in October 1997. Sales of merchandising products began in May 1999 . Thanks to clever marketing strategies and a high level of sympathy among the population, Lizzie became better known and also more commercially successful than Olly, Syd and Millie , the mascots of the 2000 Summer Olympics .

Lizzie's voice was spoken by Australian singer and actress Olivia Newton-John .
