Athena and Phoibos were the mascots of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens .

description

The mascots represent the Greek gods of wisdom ( Athena ) as well as of light and music ( Apollo , one of his most common nicknames was Phoibos). They were developed by the Greek designer Spyros Gogos and from 196 proposals submitted by the Organizing Committee of the Games (ATHOC) selected.

The two mascots are twins (although Artemis, and not Athene, is Apollo's twin sister in Greek mythology) and thus symbolize the brotherhood among all participants in the games. The colors blue and orange represent the Greek sea and the Greek sun.

In the design, Athena and Phoibos are modeled on a terracotta doll from the Archaic Age (around 7th century BC). These daidala were bell-shaped and had movable limbs. The originals are on display in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

The 2004 Summer Olympics logo featured an olive branch on a blue background. This took up the symbol of the ancient award ceremonies.
