Heróis do Mar (dt .: hero of the seas) was a Portuguese avant-garde - Pop - band from Lisbon .

history

1979 to 1980 (foundation)

After the breakup of the punk rock band Os (Fabulosos) Faíscas (German: the (fabulous) lightning bolts) founded in 1977 , Pedro Ayres Magalhães and other bandmates founded the New Wave / Postpunk band Corpo Diplomático (German: Diplomatic Corps) in 1979 . After the end of 1980 they founded the pop band Heróis do Mar. The name is taken from the first words of the Portuguese national anthem ( A Portuguesa ). The deliberately excessive use of national symbols and terms became a trademark of the group, which was musically distinguished by avant-garde pop music. Her dazzling, stylish demeanor became an essential part of her well-thought-out marketing concept, together with her nationalist provocations a few years after the Carnation Revolution and the fall of the authoritarian Estado Novo regime.

1981 to 1990 (dissolution)

Their contemporary pop music, influenced by New Wave , New Romantic and Portuguese musical traditions, found growing attention, initially in musical circles, with performances and the like. a. in Rock Rendez-Vous , then in the general public, also thanks to their polemical band appearances in video clips and at concerts. In 1982 their single Amor reached platinum status , and the band gained enormous fame. They were the first Portuguese band to receive a gold record, and they also played concerts internationally, for example with Roxy Music in Paris in 1982. After the single Paixão (Eng .: passion) was released in 1983, the British magazine The Face and the French Actuel they are the best band in Europe.

After a few more successful releases, the band went through a creative crisis, which they solved on the occasion of a trip to Macau by a subsequent long stay there, from which they returned with a newly produced album. In 1988 they finally released their last album, and after a last concert in October 1989, the band stopped their activity in 1990.

Since 1990

With the exception of the drummer Tozé Almeida, who founded the television film and advertising film production company Panavídeo , all band members then pursued further careers as musicians. The singer Rui Pregal da Cunha and the guitarist Paulo Pedro Gonçalves formed the dance / pop project LX 90 and, after moving to London, the band Kick Out The Jams . Gonçalves founded the recycling fashion label Pavement there . a. David Bowie and Blur counted, and who helped set up the dressing room for the movie Velvet Goldmine . He later returned to Lisbon, where he opened the Loja Crucifixo shop. Pedro Ayres Magalhães and later Carlos Maria Trindade became the defining members of Madredeus , the internationally most successful Portuguese music group.

In 2007 the director José Francisco Pinheira made a documentary about the band ( Dança Brava , German: Wilder Tanz), and in 2011 it was released in a box with five CDs (with all recordings), one DVD (with video clips and performances), and one Companion book (with texts, pictures and information) the complete edition of the band's work.
