Nick's Film - Lightning Over Water is a semi- documentary fictional film about the American director Nicholas Ray , who is suffering from cancer, from 1980. The film accompanies the director in the last weeks of his life and is considered to be Ray's first documentary. Ray directed together with Wim Wenders .

content

The film accompanies director Nicholas Ray, who has terminal cancer. Ray became famous in the 1950s with the film ... because they don't know what they're doing . The German director Wim Wenders visited the seriously ill Ray in New York City and captured his dying process with the camera. The film is a combination of documentary elements and movie scenes. The film ends after Ray's death.

background

The two directors Wenders and Ray met while filming Wenders' 1977 film The American Friend , when Ray played the role of the painter Derwatt. Wenders said of the making of the film: “Nick told me about his cancer. He knew he was terminally ill. He wanted to die working. The film we made together was an attempt to counter cancer, providing support for the dying, during which a film was also made. But all of us who made this last trip with Nick would have done so without a film in the camera. ”( Wim-Wenders-Stiftung : Official website ).

The film was made in just a few weeks. During the implementation, Wenders also used VHS for the first time . Wenders wanted to emphasize the truth with the shaky VHS pictures, in contrast to the well-lit 35 mm film recordings, which are also part of the film.
