In the Land of Long Shadows is a feature film by Nicholas Ray from 1960. From the Eskimo's point of view, the film highlights the different living environments and cultural differences that trigger misunderstandings and conflicts. This relativizes the apparent superiority and justice of the "white man". It was based on the novel Top of the World by Hans Ruesch , who was also involved in the script. The German-language premiere took place on September 29, 1960.
action
Inuk is a simple and somewhat naive Eskimo who, as a successful hunter in a rather hostile Arctic, finally wants to become a husband. When visiting a befriended family, he finally finds a young woman and asserts himself against another recruiter. When he meets another hunter on the hunt who kills a polar bear with a rifle, he is so fascinated by the rifle that white settlers brought into the country that he goes to a trading post with furs. There a missionary tries to teach him Christian doctrine. In a chain of cultural misunderstandings, he negligently kills the missionary. Three years later, Inuk is found and picked up by two police officers who are supposed to bring him to court. While one policeman freezes to death while marching through the snow, Inuk saves the life of the second policeman. He gets to know the Eskimos' world better and finally ensures that Inuk is not punished.
criticism
The lexicon of the international film writes: "Sham documentary about Eskimo life, whereby the outdoor shots of nature and hunting experiences come into their own", but found the plot less convincing. The film was received positively in France and heavily criticized in Italy. The theme of the contrast between the friendly, generous savages and the corrupting civilization, popular at the beginning of the 20th century, is taken here to the extreme. The musical commentary was praised.
