biography
After attending a trade school, Tonti worked as a press photographer. In 1934 he began working in the film sector, initially as a camera assistant and still photographer. In 1938 Tonti began as head cameraman, mostly in little-noticed entertainment films, but also in the propaganda film Benghazi . After his engagement at Luchino Visconti's Ossessione , he became a sought-after cameraman of neorealism and was one of the most sought-after cameramen in Italy in the 1950s, working with directors such as Federico Fellini , Roberto Rossellini and King Vidor . More and more he worked on trivial films that were produced for mass entertainment . Towards the end of his career, Tonti then increasingly worked on English-language films.
