They live by night (AKA They Live by Night ), also known as the shadow of the night , is an American film noir of 1948, the directorial debut of Nicholas Ray meant. The novel Thieves Like Us by Edward Anderson (1905–1969) , published in 1937, served as a template .

Young Arthur “Bowie” Bowers, wrongly convicted of murder, escapes from prison along with older bank robbers Chicamaw and Henry. Arthur needs money so he can pay a lawyer and finally prove his innocence in the murder case. To do this, he is planning a bank robbery together with the other two escaped. Arthur falls in love with young Catherine, but the bank robbery goes wrong.

Anderson's 1937 novel described how poverty and crime belonged together in the Great Depression . In 1974 the novel was made into a film again as thieves like us , directed by Robert Altman .

They Live by Night is highly regarded by film critics today, with all 18 Rotten Tomatoes reviews being positive. The Lexicon of International Films writes: “Nicholas Ray's first feature film is staged as a romantic love story, the happy ending of which is prevented by ignorance, evil and inability of the environment. Also interesting because of the new moral assessment of the ostensibly "bad" characters. "
