Will Lee (born August 6, 1908 in New York City , † December 7, 1982 there ) was an American actor.

life and career

In the 1930s, Lee appeared in numerous Broadway plays, including Johnny Johnson , Boy Meets Girl , and The Time Of Your Life . He played the leading role in the play Golden Boy . During World War II, Lee directed several plays in Australia and Manila for the entertainment of American soldiers. He also worked as an acting teacher. After the war, Lee continued to appear in plays on Broadway. During the McCarthy era , Lee was suspected of being a communist and was " blacklisted " for five years . He later taught at several schools and universities.

In 1941 he had made his film debut in the comedy Whistling in the Dark on the side of Red Skelton and Conrad Veidt . In Hollywood, however, Lee was always a supporting actor. From 1969 Lee played the role of the shopkeeper Mr. Hooper on Sesame Street (originally Sesame Street ). In Germany the character became known as Mr. Huber . On the side, Lee continued to work in films and in commercials . In 1982, Will Lee died of a heart attack at the age of 74 . The producers of Sesame Street then decided to let the character of Mr. Hooper die as well. Thus the subject of death was dealt with for the first time in Sesame Street . The episode, in which the residents of Sesame Street grapple with Mr. Hooper's death, later became known as Farewell, Mr. Hooper and was honored by the Daytime Emmys as one of the "10 most influential moments in daytime television".
