life and work

After graduating from the University of Utah , Byron Foulger began working as a stage actor, initially in smaller theaters. Between 1920 and 1922 he appeared in at least five plays on Broadway , in which Moroni Olsen was often involved. Together with his wife, the actress Dorothy Adams , he later belonged to the then very well-known Moroni Olsen Players . Eventually he came to the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena , where he was successful as an actor and director. In the late 1930s he appeared in radio versions of films made by the Lux Radio Theater . In 1937 he spoke on the NBC radio show The Chase and Sanburn Hour alongside Mae West and Don Ameche in a sketch about Adam and Eve the snake. This sketch sparked the Mae West Incident , due to which Mae West was banned from all NBC radio programs.

Byron Foulger's first film appearance was in a small role in the film Night World in 1932 . From 1937 he began a career mostly as a supporting actor in smaller roles, very often without mention in opening or closing credits . During this career he has appeared in a very large number of films; the numbers vary from over 300 to over 450. Hal Erickson said his face is one of the most famous faces that has ever been seen in films. He has had roles in well-known films such as Life Artist , Mr. Smith Goes to Washington , The Great Edison , Pirates in the Caribbean Sea , When you said goodbye , Clara Schumann's great love , The Three Musketeers or Sacramento . He had bigger roles in smaller films like The Man They Could Not Hang or The Panther's Claw . Byron Foulger starred in Bernard B. Ray 's 1938 film It's All in Your Mind. William Beaudine cast him in his 1957 film Up in Smoke against his type as the devil, whom he enjoys playing. According to Charles P. Mitchell, Byron Foulger's portrayal of the devil is the only feature of the film.

Between 1950 and 1970 Byron Foulger appeared in television series such as Captain Midnight , Maverick , Twilight Zone , Die Untbrechlichen , Bonanza , Perry Mason , Smoking Colts , Mr. Ed , The Addams Family or Auf der Flucht . Byron Foulger was married to actress Dorothy Adams from the 1920s until his death . The two had a daughter, Rachel Ames , who also became an actress. Byron Foulger died on April 4, 1970 of heart problems. He was buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery .
