Martin Schäfer (cameraman)

Martin Schäfer (born July 6, 1943 in Munich , † April 11, 1988 in Wangen im Allgäu ) was a German cameraman .

Life

Schäfer completed an apprenticeship as a photographer after high school and was employed in various positions in the film industry from 1968, particularly as a lighting technician . In 1971 he was the first camera assistant under Robby Müller .

In this position, he worked for various directors of the New German Cinema for years after his own debut as head cameraman in 1973 . Not until 1977 did he only work as chief cameraman. He made experimental films with directors such as Helke Sander , Rudolf Thome and Hans-Christoph Blumenberg , documentaries and feature films directed by Vadim Glowna and Wim Wenders . For his Der Stand der Dinge (1981/82) he received a gold film tape as part of the team in 1983 , at the same time for Dies rigorose Leben , for which he also received a special prize from the German Camera Prize 1984. From 1985 he led courses in camera and light at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin . Schäfer died unexpectedly of a heart attack .
