(19034) Santorini is an asteroid of the main outer belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory ( IAU code 675) .
The asteroid belongs to the Schubart family, a group of asteroids named after (1911) Schubart .
(19034) Santorini was named on July 13, 2004 after the Greek Cycladic island of Santorini , which is of volcanic origin and in whose sea-flooded caldera the islands of Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni are located.
