Galbán started out as a guitarist and tres player in various local bands in his hometown Gibara, in the province of Holguín. He initiated his professional musician career there with the Orquesta Villa Blanca. In 1956 he went to Havana in search of better musical perspectives. In 1963 the guitarist Los Zafiros joined and became its musical director. The vocal quartet was formative for Cuban popular music of the 1960s. In 1972 he left the successful band (according to the well-known pianist Pedro “Peruchín” Justíz, Los Zafiros needed two guitarists to replace Galbán) and two years later, in 1974, he founded the band Batey, with whom he worked for 23 years and as a guitarist, singer and pianist toured 60 countries.

In 1994 he became a member of the Vieja Trova Santiaguera quintet, which was particularly successful in Spain and the rest of Europe .

In this respect, Manuel Galbán had long since made a name for himself, but achieved great, ultimately worldwide fame when he joined the Buena Vista Social Club music project founded by the American musician Ry Cooder in 1996 . Galbán played as a guitarist alongside other well-known Cuban musicians such as Ibrahim Ferrer , Rubén González , Eliades Ochoa , Omara Portuondo and Compay Segundo . In 2001 he recorded the album Cachaíto with bassist Orlando "Cachaíto" López, who was also involved in the Buena Vista Social Club , and other musicians .

In 2003 there was another collaboration between him and Ry Cooder, from which the album Mambo Sinuendo emerged . For this, the two received the Grammy for the best instrumental album in the pop music category at the 2004 Grammy Awards , ahead of Prince's album NEWS , which was also nominated . At Mambo Sinuendo among other things, the were drummer Jim Keltner , the conga player Miguel Anga Diaz and Cachaíto López involved.

The musician was a member of the Buena Vista Social Club until his death from a heart attack .
