Orlando Lopez

Candelario Orlando López Vergara (born February 2, 1933 in Havana , Cuba ; † February 9, 2009 there ) was a Cuban bass player .

Life

Orlando "Cachaíto" López came from a family of musicians, including at least 30 bassists. His father Orestes López , musician and composer, and his uncle Israel "Cachao" López were considered together as the most important musicians in Cuba and as the founder of the mambo and initiator of salsa music. His nickname Cachaíto was derived from his uncle and means "The little Cachao". In 1952 he played in the band "Bambú", from 1957 in the well-known big band "Riverside". From 1960 he played for the "National Symphony", at the same time he received lessons from the Czech bassist Karel Kopřiva .

"Cachaíto" became known as the bassist and founding member of the Buena Vista Social Club band . He became known worldwide through the album " Buena Vista Social Club " produced by Ry Cooder - Grammy 1999 - and Wim Wenders ' Oscar-nominated film of the same name . He was also a noted soloist. In 2002 he received the BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music for his debut album “Cachaito ”.

López died in a hospital in his hometown of Havana in 2009 at the age of 76 from complications related to his pancreatic cancer.
