Pio Leyva
Pío Leyva (born May 5, 1917 in Morón , Cuba as Wilfredo Leyva Pascual , † March 22, 2006 in Havana ) was a Cuban musician .
Life
Leyva began his artistic career as a bongo player at the age of eight . In 1932 he first appeared as a singer in an orchestra in his hometown. From 1953 he worked as a singer in various formations in Havana and worked a. a. with the composer Compay Segundo . This collaboration resulted in numerous hits such as Chan Chan . In 1997 the two teamed up again for Ry Cooders music project Buena Vista Social Club , which became internationally famous through Wim Wenders ' film of the same name. Since 2000 Leyva has toured Europe for several years in a row with the production "Live From Buena Vista". The formation " Soneros de Verdad" arose from these tours under the leadership of the singer Luis Frank Arias, composed of greats from the film and hitherto unknown musicians .
In total, Leyva worked on 25 albums in his musical career.
On March 22, 2006, Pío Leyva died of a heart attack .
