Free State of Jones is a 2016 American film about the life of Newton Knight during the Civil War . It is based on real life in Jones County, Mississippi, from 1862 to 1876. Directed by Gary Ross and starred by Matthew McConaughey .

During the American Civil War, Newton "Newt" Knight served as a medic in the Confederate Army . In the Battle of Corinth in October 1862 he meets his nephew Daniel, who was recently drafted into the military. Although Knight takes part in the fighting to protect Daniel, his nephew dies the next day. Knight then deserted to take the body to Jones County.
In his homeland, the army collects excessive taxes from the population and also takes grain and animals. After Knight fends off such an attack on a neighbor, he is hunted. With the help of the bar owner Sally, Knight hides in the swamp with a group of escaped slaves with their leader Moses Washington. His wife Serena leaves Jones County with their son. Knight begins a love affair with the house slave Rachel.
In the course of the war, the soldiers' discontent grows. After the Battle of Vicksburg , many deserters hide in the swamps with Knight as their captain. Together with the slaves they form a resistance against the confederation . They ambush supply officers and protect the population. At their peak, they occupy the southeastern part of Mississippi . The resistance movement continued until the end of the war.
After the war, Knight continued to fight for black rights . He helps Moses free his son from a slavery-like occupation. After Moses is lynched , Knight marches with a group of black voters to the polling station.
Knight and Rachel have a son, Jason. Because multiracial marriages are illegal, Knight is transferring land to her. During the course of the film, short scenes appear between the episodes of a court hearing in which his great-grandson Davis Knight was indicted 85 years later for marrying a white woman. The great-grandson of Newton Knight and slave Rachel, Davis is considered a colored man , and multiracial marriages are still illegal in Mississippi at this point.
