The Hitchhiker ( The Hitchhiker , dt. The Anhalter; in GB also Deadly Nightmares ) is a television series from 1983 to 1991.

The 85 mystery episodes, announced by a presenter, were hugely popular with viewers, but were canceled in 1991 due to a lack of money. Recurring leading actors as 'hitchhikers' were Page Fletcher in 13 episodes and Nicholas Campbell in three episodes, who sometimes had to deal with brutal violence, but were also confronted with nude scenes.

Example "What the painter saw"

Exemplary for the series are mysterious stories like that of Elizabeth Baxter's "Windows" (English: What the painter saw). The painter Jake ( David Marshall Grant ) watches the couple Monique ( Claude Jade ) and Victor (Jean-Claude Bouillon) in the house opposite. An argument between the couple inspires him to depict a violent nature between Monique and her husband. Monique meets with Jake's friend Sophie (Annabelle Mouloudji). When Sophie says that one shouldn't live with artists, Monique advises her the same thing. After a while, reality copies art and Victor beats Monique. Jake can't resist the urge to incorporate a weapon. When a shot rang out soon afterwards, Jake believed Victor shot Monique. Sophie, who is now Monique's girlfriend, almost falls victim to Jake's violent fantasies when Monique appears and shoots Jake to save Sophie. The two women now also see Jake's last picture: his death.
