Paul Matthews Hoffert (born September 22, 1943 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is a Canadian composer , pianist , vibraphonist , music teacher and scientist in the field of digital media.

Hoffert played the piano from the age of nine. He came to Toronto in 1956 and studied composition with Gordon Delamont and vibraphone with Hagood Hardy until 1963 . In 1961 he became a Canadian citizen. He has performed as a pianist and vibraphonist in jazz clubs since 1960 and recorded the album The Jazz Roots of Paul Hoffert with Bernie Piltch , Carne Bray and Archie Alleyne .

He then studied mathematics and physics at the University of Toronto and was also musical director of the CBC television series Time of Your Life from 1963 to 1965 . In 1969 he founded the rock band Lighthouse with Skip Prokop , of which he was a keyboardist and vibraphonist until 1974 and which received three Juno Awards as Canada's best pop band between 1971 and 1973 . At the National Research Council , he worked with Hugh Le Caine from 1969 to 1971 .

From 1977 to 1983 Hoffert worked for Apple , after which he worked on various digital music projects. In 1981 he founded the Canadian Academy of Cinema and Television , which he directed until 1983; In 1984 he became a professor of digital media at York University , where he founded the CulTech Research Center in 1992 , which he headed until 2000. From 1987 to 2000 he was President of the Canadian Academy of Cinema and Television , from 1994 to 1999 he also headed Intercom Ontario , which was active in the field of broadband communications. Hoffert also worked in the field of digital signing, music on demand (jukebox) and multimedia applications for teaching.

Hoffert always remained active as a musician. He re-founded the group Lighthouse in 1992 and was inducted into the Canadian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. He has performed live digital performances such as Cyber ​​Soirée (1996), SMART Toronto (1999) and Supercomputing (2001). In addition to numerous film scores, he also composed music-theatrical works, ballets and orchestral works and wrote several books on new media and music. In 1997 he received the Arts Medal of the Ontario Arts Council , in 2004 he was named a Member of the Order of Canada .
