Ausflippt (original title: Outrageous! ) Is a Canadian fiction film by director Richard Benner from 1977. The film opened in the USA on July 31, 1977. In Germany, the film premiered in February 1978 at the Berlinale .

action

"There are three important things in life: sex, films - and my career. You should think about it a lot more often and almost never about yourself," advises the hairdresser Robin Turner to his roommate and school friend Liza Conners. Liza, previously a voluntary patient in a mental hospital, suddenly stood on Robin's doorstep. Robin was too soft-hearted to send her away. He takes her in, protects her from her family, friends, and medical advisors, who all want to bring her back to the institution for her own good.

Robin supports Liza in her fight to conquer madness. With his sardonically witty manner, he distracts her from their melancholy brooding.

Liza soon realizes that Robin also has his own problems and encourages him to step out of the monotonous barber shop and pursue a career as a show biz star. He is said to embody the women he has imitated and idolized for most of his life: Peggy Lee , Barbra Streisand , Mae West , Tallulah Bankhead , Carol Channing , Marlene Dietrich , Bette Midler , Pearl Bailey , Ella Fitzgerald , Ethel Merman and Judy Garland . All of them are brought to life in Robin's portrayals, as he celebrates his first triumphs in the gay bars of Toronto.

Meanwhile, after a casual acquaintance with a taxi driver, Liza discovers that she is pregnant. Against the advice of the doctor and her family, she is determined to keep the baby. Robin seeks glamor and fame in New York and is lucky. Liza, on the other hand, suffers a miscarriage, the hallucinations return and she wants to surrender to the urges of her surroundings and return to the clinic when Robin puts her in the taxi at the last second and takes her to New York. In the midst of all the neurotics of the show scene, Liza should enjoy her life ...
