Archie Alleyne

Archibald Alexander "Archie" Alleyne (* 7. January 1933 in Toronto , † 8 June 2015 ) was a Canadian jazz - drummer , who was active in the music scene of Toronto.

Live and act

Alleyne grew up in the Kensington Market neighborhood of Toronto and taught himself to play the drums. He began his musical career as a drummer in the Town Tavern jazz club . There he accompanied guest jazz greats such as Billie Holiday , Lester Young , Stan Getz , Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster in Toronto in the 1950s . In 1967 he had to temporarily interrupt his musician career after he was seriously injured in a car accident, and from 1969 worked as a restaurant owner. In the early 1980s, Alleyne began to work again as a musician when he led a quartet with Frank Wright and recorded an album. In 1989 he toured the Caribbean and Africa with Oliver Jones , captured in the concert film Called Oliver Jones in Africa from 1990. From 1956 to 2012 he participated in 39 recording sessions, including Peter Appleyard , Moe Koffman , Phil Nimmons , Jay McShann and George Benson , Junior Mance , Jim Galloway , Wray Downes, and Ranee Lee . He also founded the Archie Alleyne Fund for young musicians.

Shortly before his death in June 2015, Alleyne completed his autobiography Color Me Jazz: The Archie Alleyne Story . Alleyne died of complications from cancer.

Prizes and awards

Alleyne was named a member of the Order of Canada in 2012. In 2015 he was awarded the Harry Jerome Award .
