Ranee Lee

Ranee Lee (* 26. October 1942 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is one of the United States coming Canadian jazz singer .

Live and act

Lee grew up in New York City, where she performed as a singer while in high school. She began her career as a dancer and played drums and tenor saxophone in various touring groups before moving to Montréal around 1970 . She then focused on jazz singing and put on a number of albums on the Canadian label Justin Time Records . On their first album Deep Song (1989) had Milt Hinton and Oliver Jones with, on their second album Jazz on Broadway was Red Mitchell sideman. She appeared in the play Lady Day ; She was heavily influenced by Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington .

She is also the author of several children's books ( Nana, What do you say? ). She lives in Québec and was married to the jazz guitarist Richard Ring (1938–2018).

Prizes and awards

Ranee Lee has received multiple awards, including the Order of Canada (2006) and the Dora Mavor Moore Award ; In 2010 she received the Juno Award for her album Ranee Lee Lives Upstairs.
