Bernie Piltch
Bernhard David "Bernie" Piltch (born August 12, 1927 in Montreal ; † April 7, 1983 in Toronto ) was a Canadian modern jazz musician (saxophone, clarinet and flute).
Live and act
Piltch took clarinet lessons with Herbert Pye at the Toronto Conservatory in the 1940s and was a composition student with Gordon Delamont in the 1950s . He began his career as a musician in the Jack Evans dance band in 1943 and later belonged to the bands of Bobby Gimby , Benny Louis , Bert Niosi and Art Hallman . As a soloist he played in the jazz bands of Rob McConnell and Norman Symonds and worked with Ron Collier until the mid-1960s .
Since the late 1950s Piltch played in the radio and television orchestras of the CBC ; from 1968 to 1975 he was also the saxophonist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra . In 1970 he played the solo part in Norman Sxymonds' The Nameless Hour ; with Dave Young he played the premiere of Harry Freedman's play Scenario . John Wyre dedicated the piece Bernie for bass clarinet, choir and percussion group to him, which he premiered in 1976. He has recorded jazz LPs with Ron Collier, Phil Nimmons , Jimmy Dale , Duke Ellington , Gene Lees , Paul Hoffert and the Spitfire Band and can be heard on albums as a member of the orchestras of Guido Basso , Johnny Burt and Jerry Thot . Since the late 1970s, he has also performed in jazz clubs in Toronto with his sons Rob and David .
