The Speicher XI is a historical warehouse building in the Überseestadt in Bremen , where among other things, to Harbor Museum Bremen , the Bremer Center for Building Culture and the University of the Arts Bremen are.

history

In order to bring lucrative trade and shipping into the city, Bremen built a port downstream of the city center, the Europahafen, from 1887 . After the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen joined the Zollverein in 1888, the Europahafen became a free port .

Speicher XI was built from 1908 to 1912 as a cotton warehouse. The planning (1908/10) and implementation (1910/12) was carried out by the Bremen building inspection, area of customs exclusion area and overseas port, under the responsibility of building officer Eduard Suling (later chief building director) and by the architect of the building inspection in Nause. Storage XI was handed over in November 1911 and Storage XIII in April 1912. The two four-storey floor storage facilities corresponded to one another in terms of construction, floor plan and elevation. After the Second World War, both buildings were repaired and connected by a company building. The entire building was called Speicher XI .

With a length of 403 meters, it is the second longest building in Bremen; the longest building is the submarine bunker Valentin in the northern part of the district of Rekum , at 419 meters. This building mass is structured in such a way that the long facade does not appear monotonous even after the two storages have been combined. This was achieved through the stairwells protruding over the eaves line and the additional rows of loading hatches, which promote the rhythm of the facade. The facade material was used

  • Bricks on the basement, stairwell, hatches, cornices and the lintels of the segmental arched windows as well
  • Plaster on the remaining facade surfaces.

The facade is less historicizing than the older, neo - Gothic granaries of the Europahafen.

After the decline of the ports in the city of Bremen after 1970, large areas of the port areas lay fallow. As part of the urban development, the former Überseehafen basin was filled in, almost the entire area between the Überseehafen and the old town was redesigned and turned into a new district - the Überseestadt.

For reasons of the history of the port, Speicher XI has been a listed industrial monument since 1994. From 2001 to 2003 he was supervised by the Bremen building supervisor Prof. Dr. Klaus Hübotter renovates. The planners were the Bremen architects Schomers and Schürmann, who were awarded the 2010 Bremen Monument Preservation Prize for this achievement .

Since 2010, Speicher XI has been a station on the Route of Industrial Heritage in the northwest .
