Bremen Monument Preservation Prize

The Bremen Monument Preservation Prize has been awarded every three years since 2010 for special achievements in the preservation and care of cultural monuments in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen . The award is sponsored by the initiators of the State Office for Monument Preservation Bremen and Aufbaugemeinschaft Bremen e. V. , the cooperation partners Chamber of Architects Bremen, Chamber of Crafts Bremen and Chamber of Commerce Bremen - IHK for Bremen and Bremerhaven as well as the media partners Weser-Kurier and Nordsee-Zeitung . The patron is the current President of the Senatewho has also held the office of Senator for Culture in the state of Bremen since 2007 .

The prize is intended to honor "particularly committed services to the preservation and maintenance of architectural monuments in Bremen and Bremerhaven ". In addition, the general “awareness of monuments as a cultural asset and as a location factor in the state of Bremen” is to be promoted.

Monuments of all kinds can be awarded, both as individual objects and as a whole building ensemble or complex. It can also be a garden monument or a technical monument that has been restored over the past four years. Also suitable are moving monuments such as listed vessels.

Award criteria

The Bremen Monument Preservation Prize is awarded in four categories. To be honored:

The named persons and organizations can apply for the award with a description of their project at the State Office for Monument Preservation. The selection is made by a jury, which usually meets under the direction of an external state curator. Other members of the jury are representatives of the initiators, cooperation and media partners.

The most important criterion for architects, engineers and craft businesses is the outstanding quality of the work. In the case of builders and volunteers, extraordinary commitment is particularly important.

During a ceremony in the town hall, the winners will receive a certificate and a plaque that can be attached to the monument. The total prize money is 3,000 euros. In addition, the media partners are awarding a special prize with prize money of 2500 euros. Special recognition can also be given in the categories.

    • Recognition: Püffel Architects for the sensitive and space-creating renovation of the Vegesack town church .
    • Recognition: Architects + Designer, Müller, Diederichs, Keil, GME Group for the renovation of the former American Consulate General, which was particularly successful in terms of energy and monument conservation .

    • Prize: Restorer Matthias Seefried for the exemplary restoration of the historical wall painting in the choir and triumphal arch area in the Aumund church .
    • Recognition: Johann Osmers GmbH & Co. KG for the outstanding work to restore the copper roof of the Schütting house .
  • Category: Builders
  • Category: Volunteers
    • Prize: Verein Altes Pumpwerk e. V. for the voluntary efforts to maintain the pumping station I ; Cash prize 3000 euros.
  • Special prize: Association of Friends of the Sendesaales e. V. for the high and long-term commitment against the demolition of the Radio Bremen broadcasting hall ; Cash prize 2500 euros.

2013

Wätjens Park , Roseliusgarten

The jury (chair: Udo Mainzer, former state curator of the Rhineland) decided the following awards from 45 applications:

    • Prize: Druge-Bau GmbH for the exemplary restoration of the Wencke Dock in Bremerhaven.
    • Recognition: Kanning Parkett GmbH for the excellent craftsmanship of the historical inlaid parquet floors and wooden stairs in the Bremen-Mitte registry office.
  • Category: Builders
  • Category: Volunteers
    • Prize: Förderverein Wätjens Park e. V. for the enormous commitment to the preservation and valorisation of Wätjens Park ; Cash prize 3000 euros.
  • Special award: Evangelical parish Arsten-habenhausen for the restoration and renovation of the linden arcade in the Arster parish garden ; Cash prize 2500 euros.

2016

    • Prize: Angelis & Partner architects for the exterior restoration of the tower of St. Jacobi Church .
    • Recognition: Kastens + Siemann architects for the renovation and revitalization of the Union brewery .

    • Prize: Claus Ellenberger Bau GmbH for the renovation of the south tower of the Church of Our Lady .
    • Recognition: Brock GmbH & Co. KG for the development of a window construction in the Fruchthof .

    • Prize: Förderverein Knoops Park e. V. for voluntary work at Knoops Park ; Cash prize 3000 euros.

  • Category: craft businesses
    • Prize: Kossann & Melching restoration workshop for securing and consolidating the wooden coffered ceilings in Villa Wolde .
    • Recognition: C. Ellenberger Bau GmbH for the renovation of the south tower of the St. Stephani cultural church.
    • Recognition: Laura Blumenberg (restorer) for the superbly crafted reconstruction of the wood and plaster ceilings in the office building of the main station.
  • Category: Builders
    • Prize: Horticultural Office of the City of Bremerhaven Municipality for its efforts to preserve Thiele’s Garden in Bremerhaven.
    • Recognition: Alfred Schumm and Angelika Wunsch for the commitment to restore the facade of their Altbremer house, Keplerstraße 13, to the condition it was in when it was built.
  • Category: Volunteers.
    • Prize: Rolf and Erika Diehl for an admirable commitment in the ongoing mediation of monuments and the explanation of the Aalto high-rise ; Cash prize 3000 euros.
    • Recognition: The Horn-Lehe Citizens' Association for their outstanding commitment to the renovation of the Horner Mühle.
  • Special prize: Wikipedia: WikiProjekt Bremen / BremenpediA and OpenStreetMap for the voluntary community effort in the context of projects of free knowledge to convey the preservation of monuments in the state of Bremen to a broad audience via different media; Cash prize 2500 euros.

International recognition of the award

In 2019, the Council of Europe included the Bremen Monument Preservation Prize in the catalog THE GOLDEN COLLECTION OF GOOD PRACTICES for the European Heritage Strategy for the 21st century .
