Die Welle is a steamship that was built in 1915 by Atlas-Werke Aktiengesellschaft in Bremen for the building authority for the correction of the Lower Weser . Along with the Oder-Ems Canal, this straightening was one of the largest hydraulic engineering projects in the empire. The launching of the steamer was on August 11, the completion on October 19, 1915. The ship is 37.40 meters long, 7.20 meters wide and has a draft of 2.90 meters. Two piston steam engines, no longer in existence today, drove two screws. A saloon offered space for 15 passengers.

The ship was used on the Weser as a tour ship , tug and auxiliary icebreaker . From 1921 the ship belonged to the Reich Ministry of Transport , after the building office for the Lower Weser Correction was dissolved when the administration of the waterways was incorporated into the Reich Ministry of Transport. From then on it was also used for supply trips to the beacons in the Weser estuary.

During the Second World War , the ship temporarily drove for the Navy in Emden and Wilhelmshaven. After the Second World War, the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration took over the ship, which finally decommissioned it on January 17, 1975.

On April 10, 1975, a restaurateur bought the ship, who converted it into a variety and restaurant ship and operated it on the Schlachte in Bremen. During the renovation, the ship was largely gutted. In 1984 and 1986 there were fires on board, in which the superstructures, some of which were still preserved after the conversion, were destroyed.

In 1994 the now no longer managed wave sank at its berth on the Schlachte. The Bremen Waterways and Shipping Authority finally had the ship lifted. The unfit ship was then laid up in the industrial port .

In 1998 the newly founded association Dampfer "Welle" eV bought the ship and had it brought to the fishing port of Bremerhaven on July 20, 2000 , where the restoration of the original state of 1915 began. For the renovation, the ship was lifted onto the quay on the port canal in January 2001.

Wave steam engine under construction

On October 21, 2009, the restored ship, which the association Dampfer “Welle” wants to preserve as a traditional ship, was lifted back into the water and first moved to the former salt pier at the entrance to fishing port I. In 2011 the ship was placed under monument protection. A suitable machine was acquired, restored and reinstalled by the association. The second main engine should possibly be rebuilt.

The “tireless commitment” of the Dampfer “Welle” e. V. was honored with the special prize of the Bremen Monument Preservation Prize 2016, combined with prize money of 2500 euros. The German Foundation for Monument Protection also contributed financially to the renovation in 2017.

In 2019 the wave was moved to its new berth in the New Harbor at the German Emigration Center .
