history

In 1888, a first, large, four- to six-storey shed was built at the Europahafen, which was destroyed in the Second World War.

Restoring the functionality of the port of Bremen was very important for the port city. The new storage building was built on the area of the former storage facility between 1948 and 1950 according to plans by the architects Max Säum and Günther Hafemann (Bremen) as the first new storage building after the war as a seven-storey, monumental structure with a slightly inclined pitched roof . The difficult subsoil made complex pile foundations necessary. The new building, 226 meters long and 30 meters wide, had a storage area of 36,000 m². The construction consisted of prestressed reinforced concrete prefabricated parts. Architecturally, the modern, clearly structured building was made of red stone with an infilled, visible reinforced concrete grid with high-lying ribbon windows. The building was divided into 16 departments, which could be reached by heavy-duty elevators. Ramps running on both sides ensured the transshipment to rail and truck.

As a result of the structural change in the port industry in Bremen, the occupancy rate also decreased for the building and other uses were discussed in the 1990s. In 2000, the Senate decided on a “development concept for the restructuring of the old harbor areas in Bremen” and by 2003 a master plan for Überseestadt had been drawn up . In 2004 the initiators - the company Justus Grosse - started the project development for the conversion of the storage facility I and acquired the property in 2005. In a short time, the renovation was carried out in 2006 according to plans by the Hilmes Lamprecht architectural group (Bremen). The warehouse became a building for office and commercial lofts. The character of the large-scale usage units with the old wooden floors was retained. The exposure was carried out through large-format steel and glass elements.

The architecture guide Bremen writes: “The surprisingly quick reuse of the entire Speicher I was an important impetus for the development of Überseestadt.” In 2010 the architects were honored with a recognition for their work on Speicher I.

Today (2014) the building is used for shops, office purposes, service providers, warehouses and a restaurant.
