The ensemble includes exotic and local trees, several ponds, numerous sculptures, a moor cottage and a house in the Moorish style . history

Oil painting: Grete Itzen, painted by her future husband Georg Thiele, 1925
  • 1923 - The brothers Gustav and Georg Thiele bought the property. At the time Leherheide was a sparsely populated moor and heather area. Gustav (1877–1968), a trained violinist, trained himself as a sculptor. His brother Georg (1886–1968), who worked as a photographer, was a passionate painter in his spare time.
  • 1929 - Georg Thiele married the painter Grete Itzen (1905–1990), who was the model for many of the sculptures in the park.
  • from 1925 - The brothers began to create a fantasy landscape from what was then 6000 m². Numerous sculptures and fountains were made with the help of concrete and construction wire. The house was built by Thieles in the Moorish style, as a studio and guest house they built a moor cottage next to it. Thanks to plantings that stretched over 40 years, the park now has a variety of exotic and native plants. The facility was originally used privately. Only later was the park - now expanded to 19,000 m² - made accessible to the public.
  • 1971 - After the death of the two brothers, Grete Thiele was forced to close the park. The complex became increasingly neglected, much was destroyed or stolen.
  • 1985 - The city of Bremerhaven bought the property and renovated the facilities and sculptures.
  • 1987 - The Friends of Thieles Garten e. V. was founded.
  • 1990 - The garden was reopened. From now on it also became a cultural venue for concerts, readings and exhibitions.
