The Hafenmuseum Speicher XI is located in Speicher XI in the Überseestadt in Bremen . It deals with the development of the Bremen ports with a local history approach.

Permanent exhibition

After the decline of the ports of Bremen at the end of the 20th century, large areas of the port areas lay fallow. In the course of urban development, the former Überseehafen basin was filled in, almost the entire area between the Überseehafen and the old town was planned and transformed into a new district, the Überseestadt.

The museum reminds of the earlier use of the area, which was characterized by ships, cargo handling and port life. The history of the port is told on the basis of individual exhibits with extensive textual explanations. Eyewitness reports complement the exhibition aurally.

history

The Speicher XI building was built in 1908–1912 as a cotton storage facility and renovated in 2001–2003. With a length of 400 meters, it is the longest building in the city of Bremen. The Bremen building contractor and patron Klaus Huebotter , like many historical buildings in Bremen, saved Speicher XI from demolition. In 2003 he had Speicher XI refurbished, in which numerous institutions have settled in addition to the Bremen University of the Arts . The port museum is located on the south-eastern end of the building. Speicher XI has been a listed building as an industrial monument since 1994.

The museum opened on February 28, 2004. It is guaranteed and operated by the non-profit Kulturforum Speicher XI GmbH. Since 2010 the museum has been a station on the Route of Industrial Culture in the northwest .
