Klaus Huebotter (2009)

Otto- Klaus Huebotter (born May 17, 1930 in Hanover ) is a Bremen-based building contractor and patron who, with his commitment to the preservation and conversion of buildings that are significant in terms of the history of the city, as well as cultural and peace work, has had a lasting impact on his adopted home of Bremen.

Life

Klaus Hübotter - a son of the garden architect and professor of the TH Hannover Wilhelm Hübotter - studied law in Hamburg and was awarded a Dr. jur. with the topic " The planning of a city - legal and organizational issues in the construction of new municipalities in the Federal Republic ". Here he already showed his connection to urban planning and architecture . His older brother Peter Hübotter worked as an architect in Hanover. Hübotter married a Hamburg book designer in 1963.

Hübotter had been a member of the KPD since 1950 and a functionary of its youth organization Free German Youth . After the FDJ was banned in West Germany in 1951, Huebotter organized contact with other left-wing groups while he was illegally. He was arrested in 1953 and was remanded for nine months. In 1956, the Düsseldorf Regional Court sentenced him to 18 months in prison as a “ringleader of an anti-constitutional association”. The remainder of the sentence remaining after the pre-trial detention was taken into account was released by the NRW Interior Minister Rudolf Amelunxen on pardon. Hübotter later became a member of the DKP , which he left in 1991. As a result of membership in the Communist Party and its ban, Hübotter was not allowed to work as a lawyer.

Newspaper publisher

In 1955, Hübotter and Klaus Rainer Röhl founded the “Studentenkurier” magazine in Hamburg , the forerunner of the magazine concrete . The foundation was largely financed by the GDR via Huebotters FDJ connection. The following year, Röhl became the sole publisher. In 1973, Huebotter took a third of the company, which had run into financial difficulties, but was unable to avert bankruptcy. After the bankruptcy, he acquired the naming rights from the bankruptcy estate, which he still holds today, and together with Hermann L. Gremliza founded the new Konkret Verlag, in which the magazine appeared again from autumn 1974.

Construction clerk

In 1964 , Hübotter became a building contractor who stands up for sophisticated architecture in new buildings and is particularly committed to the preservation and conversion of historical buildings or other important buildings. Examples in Bremen are the Wall Café , the Villa Ichon , the Schlachthof cultural center , the House of Science , the residential complex Schwachhauser Heerstraße 361 (1973, BDA Prize Bremen 1974), his former office building at Bischofsnadel 6 (1974), the Speicher XI , the former energy center at Speicher XI as a venue and the Julius Bamberger department store (around 2001–2007); and outside of Bremen the windmill in Nordholz (1969). From 2007 he devoted himself to the project to reuse the former Radio Bremen site on Heinrich-Hertz-Strasse in Schwachhausen with the maintenance of the large broadcasting hall.

Hübotter was a lecturer and honorary professor in the architecture department at the University of Bremen .

Cultural engagement

In addition, Hübotter was particularly committed and committed in the cultural field and in the peace movement. Among other things, he initiated and implemented the preservation of Villa Ichon , which was opened as a cultural site in 1982 and is now known nationwide as a forum for cultural and peace work. He is co-founder of the sponsoring association for this listed building in Bremen's Ostertorviertel and initiator of the Villa Ichon Culture and Peace Prize, which has been awarded since 1983 . Since the beginning of 2004 he has been running the Speicher XI harbor museum in Speicher XI . He is in charge of rescuing the Bremen broadcasting hall from Radio Bremen.
