Star Wars: The Clone Wars (working title: Clone Wars 3D ) is an American computer animation film set in the Star Wars universe of George Lucas and released in German cinemas on August 14, 2008. The start date in the USA was August 15, 2008.

The action takes place between Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith . In contrast to the Star Wars: Clone Wars series, a more elaborate 3D animation was used instead of a 2D animation . The film is the pilot for the series of the same name , which started on October 3, 2008 in the USA on Cartoon Network and premiered on November 23, 2008 in Germany on ProSieben .

action

The Clone Wars are raging in the galaxy. In the outer periphery the war is developing in favor of the separatists. They kidnap Rotta the Hutt, the son of the powerful gang boss Jabba the Hutt . With this they want to get him to ask the Galactic Republic for help, because if they fail to save his child, Jabba could turn to the separatists. The Jedi master Yoda decides to send Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker on this mission.

Kenobi and Skywalker are currently stationed with their army of clone warriors on the planet Christophsis, where they are fighting the separatist General Whorm Loathsom and his droid army. The situation is serious because the clone warriors are far outnumbered. After some fighting, help comes to the clones when the young, female Padawan Ahsoka Tano arrives to reinforce them. It turns out that the young girl was not assigned to Obi-Wan, as expected, but to Anakin. Anakin, who actually doesn't want a student, reacts negatively to Ahsoka at first. However, he sneaks with her behind the enemy lines to turn off the shield generator, the backbone of the planet's separatists, which ultimately succeeds. The separatists are defeated.

The three Jedi are now entrusted by Master Yoda with the task of rescuing Jabba's son, Rotta. Anakin and his new student, whose relationship with him has improved in the meantime, are supposed to save him from an abandoned monastery. He is being held there by separatists, which the republic does not know. Obi-Wan is supposed to go to Jabba in Tatooine to start negotiations.

Anakin and Ahsoka now attack the heavily fortified monastery on Teth with an army of clone warriors. They are forced to land on the forest floor and have to climb the mountain with ropes and ruffs. They are already being shot at by battle droids. After getting to the top and wiping out the crew, they enter the dark interior of the monastery. Here they are greeted by a droid who introduces himself as the manager of the house. He tells them about the prisons in the monastery. Ahsoka and Anakin separate from the clone warriors and go into said dungeons. Here they find the sick little Huttling and take him with them. On Teth, however, more droid troops arrive under the command of the Sith student Asajj Ventress, who want to prevent the clones from rescuing the Huttling from the fortress. After some battles with droids and ventress, Ahsoka and Anakin manage to escape the mountain with Rotta. Meanwhile, the Separatist leader Count Dooku also arrives at Jabba and shows him footage of Anakin and Ahsoka, which make it look like they have kidnapped Rotta. Ventress, who had been present at the monastery before the new droids arrived, had sent them to Dooku beforehand. He offers the Hutten to join the separatists so that they can bring his son back.

On Teth, Anakin and Ahsoka have just arrived at a cargo ship they want to fly to Tatooine. From this suddenly the alleged administrator droid emerges, which turns out to be a separatist. Anakin and his new apprentice can eliminate the ship's droid and battle droids. You will eventually take control of the old ship. But a space battle rages over Teth between hunters of the republic and the remote-controlled spaceships of the separatists. The two are about to land in a Republic cruiser when the droid fighters chasing Anakin fly into the middle of the hangar and the hangar explodes. As a result, Anakin and Ahsoka have to fly alone to Tatooine with the freighter to bring Rotta back to his father. When the three emerge from hyperspace, however, the ship is shot down by Dooku's bodyguard droids and has to make an emergency landing in the middle of the desert, near the palace of Jabba the Hutt. The two decide to walk to the palace.

At the same time Obi-Wan Kenobi meets Asajj Ventress in the monastery of Teth, whereupon the two duel with the lightsaber. However, after an even fight, Ventress must flee.

Later, on Tatooine, Anakin and Ahsoka decide to split up, as Anakin senses a dark presence is getting closer. Anakin goes to the palace alone and Ahsoka takes a different route with Rotta and R2-D2 . Anakin is unexpectedly attacked by Count Dooku on his route through the desert. He believes Anakin has Rotta with him because he is carrying the backpack in which the two Jedi had transported the Hutt on his back. The two duel, but when Anakin reveals his ruse to Darth, Tyranus shows him footage of his Magna guards attacking the young Ahsoka. Anakin then flees from Count Dooku to the palace.

Obi-Wan has meanwhile ended his duel with Ventress and is returning to his space cruiser.

Meanwhile, something else is happening on Coruscant, the capital of the republic. Senator Amidala , Anakin's secret wife, learned of the Jedi's mission and tried to persuade the local Hutten Ziro, Jabba's uncle, to side with the Republic. Ziro declines resolutely. When the senator tears away from the droid escorting her out, she overhears a conversation between the Hutten and a hologram of Count Dookus, through which she finds out that Ziro Dooku helped kidnap Rotta. Padmé is caught and arrested by Ziro's bodyguards. However, she manages to contact C-3PO , her protocol droid , by chance . This arrives a little later with several clones that overwhelm Ziro. He is now forced to contact Jabba and confess his intrigue to him.

On Tatooine, Anakin is on his way to Jabba's palace with Dooku's jet sled. When he arrives, Ahsoka calls him, but Anakin doesn't hear her and drives on. He goes to Jabba and threatens him to tell him what happened to Ahsoka. Shortly thereafter, Ahsoka joins them and gives Jabba his son. Still, Jabba wants to have her killed. Shortly before a fight breaks out between Jabba's henchmen and the two Jedi, Ziro's confession arrives. Jabba lets the two Jedi go and the Republic use the hyperspace roads he controls. Anakin and Ahsoka are eventually picked up by Tatooine.

Series

The consequences of the series The Powers of Fate take place at different times, so that a list in the table is not meaningful. Also not listed miniseries, short stories, comics, books and other ancillary works of the official Star Wars - canon and the theme park Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge (between VIII and IX). The fictitious calendar of the Star Wars universe is used for the schematic classification of the actions . This differentiates between the years before the Battle of Yavin (VSY) and after the Battle of Yavin (NSY). The Battle of Yavin IV marks the end of Star Wars (1977), in which Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance destroy the first Death Star .

series

The film is the pilot for the television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and consists of four episodes. The plot about the kidnapping of Jabba's son should have been shown as a three-part pilot on TV, but these were put together into a film. One also took an episode that was produced later, but the plot took place before the kidnapping. The episode in which the first meeting between Anakin and Ahsoka was to be shown on Christophsis became the first part of the film and the four episodes were prepared for the big screen. Because Star Wars creator George Lucas said the series was too good for television, the film premiered in theaters. The four episodes were called The New Padawan , Castle of Deception , Castle of Doom, and Castle of Salvation . In the series, unlike in the pilot film, many other characters from the expanded Star Wars universe appear as the main characters in the individual episodes. For example, there is an episode in which Yoda wants to agree an alliance on the Toydarians 'home planet, while Kit Fisto tries to locate General Grievous' hiding place in another episode .

production

The effects are produced by Lucasfilm Animation in Singapore and Industrial Light & Magic . George Lucas is responsible for the production as a whole, the script was written by Henry Gilroy , along with Steven Melching and Scott Murphy. It was assured that the story will be based on the previous stories from comics and novels (the Expanded Universe ), so the continuity between the individual works should be preserved. However, Gilroy was instructed that a well-told story should by no means be dropped because of continuity.

For the German version, in contrast to the original version, the same voice actors were hired as in the normal films. Only a few voice actors celebrated new appearances, for example Josephine Schmidt as Ahsoka Tano. The voice actors were in detail:

marketing

In addition to toy figures and Lego kits, the film was also advertised with sticker albums, books, comics and videos and trailers that appeared on the Internet almost every day. The figures and kits were released on July 26, 2008. In some Toys'R'Us stores, there were also midnight events where the products could be bought from midnight. In Germany you could have yourself photographed with costumed members of the 501st Legion and receive a free action figure of General Grievous and a poster with the Lego sets for the film.

Toys'R'Us and Galeria Kaufhof had the initial sales rights for the Lego kits. Normal toy retailers were only supplied with three of the eight kits that appeared for the film in September, as five of the sets are exclusive to the two above-mentioned retailers and are only publicly sold there. Since the kits for the films were very expensive compared to other Lego products, the sales figures were also very low. Shortly before Christmas, the sets were offered cheaper.

criticism

Overall, The Clone Wars received almost exclusively negative reviews and was formally panned by some critics. The film was also nominated for the Golden Raspberry in the category “Worst Prequel, Sequel or Rip-off”.

“The effects and the modern look are absolutely spectacular. On the other hand, it takes getting used to seeing the heroes of real-life films as animated characters reduced to a rather sparse facial expression. The 114 [correction: 98] minutes of the film still pass in a flash thanks to the dominance of the fighting sequences. Conclusion: Indispensable for the 'Star Wars' community, worth seeing for lovers of animated CGI adventures . "

- cinema.de

"Elaborately designed 3D version of the animation series of the same name, which merely introduces another television adaptation of the material and above all aims to arouse interest in George Lucas' merchandising universe."

"The characters have hair that look as if they were with plasticine been modeled body that act arthritic and moving lips on half-frozen faces -. All sign that was saved in the animation"

"[The film is] the first real Star Wars flop."

- ContractMusic.com

“It's difficult to tell the droids from the Jedi drones in this animation dud. The George Lucas empire strikes back, this time against the audience. This film has lousy lightsaber fights and lousy voice actors, you just want to escape this disaster. "

- ew.com.com

“Do you remember how people talked about the Star Wars prequels like they were the worst movies ever made, even though they weren't that bad? The Clone Wars is really that bad. "

- Film.com

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
