Joonas Viljami Suotamo (born October 3, 1986 in Espoo ) is a Finnish film actor and former national basketball player .
Life
At the age of 18, Suotamo began his professional career as a basketball player in his hometown at Honka Espoo in 2004 . Just a year later, he completed three games for the Finnish national basketball team . In the same year he moved to the USA and attended Pennsylvania State University , where he did his Bachelor of Arts in 2008 . At the same time he played for the Penn State Nittany Lions team, but was not drawn in the 2009 NBA draft . After graduating from college, he returned to Finland and initially played for Lappeenrannan NMKY for two years . Since 2010 he has played in his hometown again, first for another year with Honka Espoo, then for four years with Espoo Basket Team , where he ended his career in 2015.
Suotamo became known to a wider audience in 2015 for his role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens , in which he played Wookiee Chewbacca with Peter Mayhew . Due to health problems Mayhew, of the role since Star Wars embodied (1977), Suotamo took over the role from Star Wars: The last Jedi (2017) complete.
