action
About a year has passed since the death of Supreme Leader Snoke and the Battle of Crait. Kylo Ren, the new Supreme Leader of the First Order, came into the possession of a Sith pathfinder after fighting on the volcanic planet Mustafar, who showed him the whereabouts of the former Emperor Palpatine , who was considered dead since the destruction of the second Death Star . On the planet Exegol, which is located in the unknown regions of the galaxy , the fallen Jedi finds the artificially kept emperor in a chamber under a huge citadel. The Emperor mocks him and reveals to him that he was both the real intriguer behind the past events and the creator of Kylo's former master Snoke. He offers Kylo a fleet of hundreds of Xyston-class Star Destroyers, all equipped with a weapon whose respective firepower is sufficient to destroy entire planets, on the condition that he should destroy the Jedi Rey. He then reveals to Kylo that he was wrong about Rey's true parentage .
Meanwhile, Rey trains her power skills with Leia Organa at the base of the resistance. With the help of the Ovissian informant Boolio, who in turn obtained his information from a high-ranking person within the First Order, the rumors that the Emperor has returned can be confirmed. Rey decides to go on a search for the Emperor together with Finn , Poe , Chewbacca , C-3PO and BB-8 in order to kill him and thus prevent an imminent attack on all free worlds. Rey learns from Luke's notes that a Sith Pathfinder is needed to track down the Emperor's whereabouts, of which only two exist. The scriptures show that Luke has already tried to track down the Emperor. With the Millennium Falcon, the resisters fly to the last known position data from Luke's search for the pathfinder. This leads them into the Forbidden Valley on the desert planet Pasaana in the expansion region. With the Ancestral Festival taking place on the planet, the presence of First Order troops there is increased. While strolling through the festival area, a power connection between Kylo Ren and Rey suddenly sets in. He tells her through the Force that the Emperor wants her dead, but that he has other plans. By snatching a chain that Rey had previously received from a party attendant, Kylo Rey's current whereabouts can be found and an attack on Pasaana is initiated. When the first storm troopers become aware of them, the troop receives support from a person who identifies himself as Lando Calrissian . Lando informs the troops that he and Luke have been looking for the pathfinder. He tells them that the last clues led them to Ochi and his Bestoon Legacy in the Schlingerschlucht. You decide to continue your search there. After a chase against troops of the First Order, the resistance group sinks into a floating swamp within sight of the spaceship they are looking for. This way you get into a tunnel system dug by a Vexis. There they come across Ochi's corpse and his dagger, on which the exact coordinates of the pathfinder are engraved in the runic language of the Sith. Although the protocol droid C-3PO can read and save the script, its programming forbids it to translate the runes. In the cave, the troops also encounter a large snake, which is initially hostile to the group. However, she can be soothed by Rey through the Force by healing the beast's wounds. The snake then releases the exit of the cave.
In the meantime, the First Order confiscated the falcon. Kylo and his Knights of Ren, whose presence Rey can sense in power, have also arrived in the meantime. After reaching the Bestoon Legacy, the Jedi split from the group to face Kylo. However, shortly afterwards Finn sends Chewbacca after her, who is captured by First Order forces. In the fight against Ren, who attacks with his TIE whisper hunter, Rey succeeds with the help of a power jump to perform a somersault over the spaceship and thereby sever one of the hunter's wings with her lightsaber. Thereupon Finn also reaches her location and points out the departing ship on board of which he suspects the captured Wookiee. Rey tries to bring the spaceship back to the ground with the help of the Force, but is prevented from doing so by Kylo Ren, who counteracts it with his mighty powers. Overwhelmed with exertion and anger, lightning bolts of power develop from Rey's hands, which cause the ship to explode and tear it to pieces. Rey is appalled by her act and her abilities. Together with Finn she rushes to the Bestoon Legacy and escapes from the desert planet without having dueled Kylo. Rey feels great sadness and confusion over the supposedly killed Wookiee and fears that the lightning bolts were another indication that she was being drawn to the dark side.
The troops set out to find a suitable technician who can bypass the programming of C-3PO. Since Poe Dameron knows the droid smith Babu Frik, they decide to go to Kijimi. With the help of Zorri Bliss, a former partner of Poe, they manage to reprogram C-3PO, but its memory is erased. C-3PO deciphers the runes and you learn the whereabouts of the second pathfinder. Once again, they are tracked down by the First Order, with Rey sensing the presence of Chewbacca on board Kylo's Star Destroyer. They decide to free him while Kylo and the Knights of Ren search the city for them. They manage to free Chewbacca, assisting them with General Hux , who turns out to be the traitor. When the resistance group asked why he was helping them, the latter replied that he wanted to prevent Kylo Ren from winning. Meanwhile, Rey learns from Kylo Ren that she is in fact the Emperor's granddaughter. After they managed to escape again, Allegiant General Pryde immediately exposed Hux as the wanted spy and killed him.
On board the Millennium Falcon, the troops go to Kef Bir, a moon on the planet Endor , on which the remains of the destroyed Second Death Star fell. On the moon, the resistance group encounters deserted stormtroop units from the former 77 company. When looking at the dagger in sight of the ruin, Rey discovers an extendable measuring sheet that shows her the location of the pathfinder on the wreck. Although she was forbidden by the leader of the deserted troop units due to the difficult weather conditions, Rey makes her own way to the wreck. Rey finds the pathfinder in a chamber attached to the throne room. Reaching for the Sith Pathfinder, Rey has a vision of himself as a Sith. Her dark likeness involves the Jedi in a lightsaber duel, in which the artifact falls out of her hand. Kylo Ren picks it up from the floor and destroys it to ensure that Rey can only get to Exegol through him. Then Rey is overwhelmed by her anger and begins to attack Ren with her lightsaber. At first she seems to be inferior to him in the fight, but then Leia uses the Force to contact her son, whereupon he loses his lightsaber. Rey catches Kylo's lightsaber and stabs him through the chest. Kylo sinks to the floor. Then both feel the death of the princess in power, who has used all her powers to establish contact with her son. Both mourn the loss, whereupon Rey uses the Force to heal Kylo. Then Rey steals Kylo's spaceship, which has the second pathfinder on board. Kylo stays behind and after a vision of his father Han Solo renounces the dark side of the force and throws away his lightsaber.
Rey, weighed down by the visions of the dark side and their origins, travels to Ahch-To , where Luke Skywalker lived in exile after the destruction of his new Jedi order by Kylo Ren. Rey throws Anakin's and Luke's lightsaber into the flames of Kylo's burning command shuttle, which she previously ignited herself. However, the lightsaber is intercepted by Luke, who appears in the form of a power spirit. He explains to Rey that a Jedi Knight's weapon deserves more respect and gives it back to her. He convinces her not to give up and to continue on the path of the Jedi. He also gives her Leia's lightsaber, which she once used in her Jedi training. Luke states that both he and Leia knew about Rey's true origins as Palpatine's granddaughter. Nevertheless, he trained her because he had believed in her good soul. With the help of the still existing Sith path finder, which is located in Kylo's TIE fighter, and Luke's old X-wing, Rey sets out on the way to Exegol, where the Emperor is, and sends her position to the resistance. He immediately makes his way to her and devises the plan to ask for help in the final battle against the First Order through radio signals throughout the galaxy.
At Exegol, Rey meets the Emperor, who reveals to her again that he is her grandfather. He reveals to his granddaughter that he never wanted to kill her, but wanted to make her his heir to the throne. He asks her to kill him, following an ancient Sith ritual, so that his spirit can pass over to her. To put her under pressure, he opens the ceiling of the hall and shows her the air battle that has now broken out against the remaining ships of the resistance. As the emperor's heir, it is her right to ascend the throne. By killing him, the Sith would resurrect within her and rule the galaxy. Meanwhile, the resistance begins the attack on the emperor's countless star destroyers and, after almost defeat, is supported a little later by the arrival of Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, Zorri Bliss and countless other spaceships of the allies of the resistance. Ben Solo now also arrives at Exegol and goes to see Rey. The latter refuses to kill the Emperor and instead helps Ben kill the Knights of Ren and the Emperor's Praetorian Guard. Thereupon Palpatine disarms the two with the help of power and deprives them of their life forces, which rejuvenate him and strengthen his own power. As Rey loses consciousness, the Emperor Ben plunges into an abyss and begins to incapacitate the entire resistance fleet by sending out gigantic lightning bolts. Rey regains consciousness. Strengthened by the voices of numerous Jedi masters of yesteryear, Rey finally succeeds in defeating the emperor with his own lightning bolts. The Emperor explodes in a shock wave that destroys large parts of the citadel and fatally injures Rey. Ben Solo manages to climb out of the abyss and brings Rey back to life through power, which now finally recognizes the good in him. After a kiss, Ben Solo finally dies and becomes one with power together with his mother Leia.
After the galaxy celebrates the Resistance's victory, Rey travels to Tatooine to the wet farm Luke Skywalker grew up on, and buries Luke and Leia's lightsabers at dusk. She holds her newly created yellow lightsaber in her hands. When a resident asks her for her name, the Skywalker siblings appear to her as power spirits, whereupon Rey introduces himself to the stranger as Rey Skywalker.

production
Pre-production
In October 2012, Star Wars inventor George Lucas sold his production company Lucasfilm , and with it, among other things, the rights to Star Wars , to Disney , whereupon a new Star Wars trilogy (the so-called Sequel trilogy ) was announced. It began in 2015 with The Force Awakens and continued in 2017 with The Last Jedi .
Originally the script was supposed to be written by Simon Kinberg . At D23 Expo 2015, Lucasfilm announced that Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow would direct The Rise of Skywalker , with Derek Connolly co-writing the script. In September 2016, Disney's CEO Bob Iger stated that he had received a first draft for The Rise of Skywalker from director Trevorrow. In April 2017, Lucasfilm announced that the sequel trilogy would conclude in theaters on May 24, 2019. In August 2017, The Hollywood Reporter reported that British screenwriter Jack Thorne was working on the script for the film and would be working on it with Trevorrow and Connolly. Colin Trevorrow left the project a short time later, in September 2017, due to creative differences with Lucasfilm. On September 12, JJ Abrams was introduced as the new director and screenwriter (together with Chris Terrio ), at the same time the start date initially announced for May 24, 2019 was postponed to December 20, 2019. JJ Abrams was a director and screenwriter on The Force Awakens , and Abrams was executive producer on The Last Jedi . In December 2017, shortly after the release of The Last Jedi , Abrams introduced his draft script to Bob Iger. On February 21, 2018, JJ Abrams announced that work on the script was complete. Trevorrow is mentioned by name in the credits for participating in story development despite his departure.
Death of Carrie Fishers
The character Leia Organa played by Carrie Fisher was originally supposed to play a central role in the film, as Han Solo and Luke Skywalker did in the direct predecessors The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi respectively. Due to Fisher's unexpected death in December 2016, these plans had to be discarded and far-reaching changes to the planned script had to be made. After initially considering the possibility of writing the character entirely from the film, a new script was completed by director JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio after the separation from Colin Trevorrow. Unused footage from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi were used for the scenes with Leia Organa .
Filming
Filming began on August 1, 2018 at Pinewood Studios near London . A total of three weeks was also shot in the Jordanian towns of Wadi Rum and Shakrieh. Filming was completed on February 15, 2019, just under ten months before the film was released.
Film music
As in the previous eight episodes, the soundtrack is from John Williams . The ninth Star Wars episode will also be the last for which he will compose the soundtrack. In May 2019, Williams said he liked an early cut of the film, for which he had already written almost 25 minutes on the soundtrack the previous month. The soundtrack is said to have been played and recorded in June 2019. John Williams composed a total of 135 minutes of music for the film.
synchronization
As in previous Star Wars films, the German dubbing was done by Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH in Berlin. Björn Schalla wrote the dialogue book, took over the dialogue direction and spoke the droid DO in German, which was originally spoken by the film director JJ Abrams .

Reviews
The film was rated mixed to positive by critics. The reactions of the audience were mostly positive. When movie review - aggregator Rotten Tomatoes 249 positive and 234 negative, reviewed the film with a total of 6.2 out of 10 accounted for the film on 483 reviews. With just under 100,000 reviews, however, the film was received significantly more positively by viewers with 8.6 out of 10. The film achieved a positive audience rating with around 330,000 ratings on the IMDb film database (6.7 out of 10). The film was rated more mixed on Metacritic , where it scored 5.3 (critics) and 4.8 (viewers) out of 10 points.
On Spiegel Online, Hannah Pilarczyk praises the film by screenwriter and director JJ Abrams, which successfully closes the series, but which, from her point of view, only had something to offer in the fewest moments apart from the spectacle that justified its existence beyond attracting new generations of fans would have. Like the entire sequel trilogy, the film suffers from the legacy of the three main characters of the original trilogy - Luke, Leia and Han - from whom neither the film nor the trilogy as a whole has ever been able to separate. Nevertheless, she praises the fact that in The Rise of Skywalker "the spectacle finally adds the emotional depth". Jens Balzer criticizes for Die Zeit that “especially in the first hour of the film, which is all too packed in terms of the story, [...] one can lose track of who is now, for what reason, on which remote ice, jungle or Desert World follows to solve some other riddle. ”Nevertheless, JJ Abrams' narrative style allows the film to be followed, even if one should not understand every detail. He particularly praises the work of art director Paul Inglis , who, with his sometimes exaggerated and taken to extremes, but straightforwardly simple, monochrome images, makes the characters look more human than ever before when the “hyper-realistic fantasy world is reflected in the inwardness of those heroines and heroes collapses that move in it. ”Andreas Busche confirms in the daily mirror that Abrams managed to achieve a difficult balancing act with The Rise of Skywalker . Iconographically , his film moves in “familiar worlds, but in terms of content the Star Wars mythology has moved away from its origins.” Adam Driver's acting performance in particular finds words of praise.
In the Guardian, Peter Bradshow criticizes the habit of undoing any height of fall by repeatedly bringing dead figures or objects to life, but overall praises the film as an "exciting, entertaining [and] lightning-fast finale." Richard Trenholm praises the film for CNET , fulfilling pretty much everything that fans would have wished for, criticizes the film as being frustratingly sluggish, overcrowded and heartless. Nicholas Barber concluded for the BBC that while the film was well acted, looked fantastic and had the positive message of never losing hope, he noted a sense of renewed respect for the imagination of George Lucas . The rise of Skywalker is "lovingly designed by many talented people, and yet the best they can do is to appreciate everything he did a few decades ago."
A supposed, slight course correction with regard to individual parts of the predecessor The Last Jedi was also received critically. Where the predecessor was able to convince the overwhelming number of critics, but was received more mixed by fans, the reaction to The Rise of Skywalker is almost the opposite, whereby it was obviously able to convince fans more than the majority of critics.
Gross profit
The production costs of an estimated 275 million US dollars (total cost about US $ 630 million) are revenue to the worldwide box office compared to around 1.074 billion US dollars. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is currently number 32 in the list of the world's most successful films (as of August 8, 2020). This makes The Rise of Skywalker without inflation (nominally ) the third most financially successful film in the Star Wars film series after The Force Awakens ($ 2.068 billion) and The Last Jedi (1.332 billion) .
In Germany, the rise of Skywalker achieved the ninth-best starting weekend of all time and the fifth-best starting week ever in terms of sales (with just under 13.3 million euros ). In total, the film grossed almost 60.1 million euros and attracted over 5.2 million visitors to German cinemas. Measured in terms of cinema sales in Germany, it is the most successful film of 2019.
The net profit (not including merchandising spot sale) amounts for senior studio Disney to about 300 million US dollars.

future
The rise of Skywalker is the last part of the nine films so-called Skywalker saga. Nevertheless, even after The Rise of Skywalker, more Star Wars films are to be produced. In November 2017, Disney announced that Rian Johnson , who had previously directed and written the script for The Last Jedi, had been hired for a new Star Wars trilogy. For the first part of this trilogy he is to write the script and direct again. Another trilogy is also planned. The release dates of the next three films are expected to be in 2022, 2024 and 2026.
After the financial failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story at the international box office, which is said to have caused Disney to lose more than 50 million dollars, Lucasfilm announced that it will rethink the release strategy of other Star Wars media apart from the two previously announced trilogies and series to want. Nevertheless, other projects are in preproduction.
