Planet Earth (Original title: Planet Earth ) is an eleven-part BBC - Documentary series that a comprehensive portrait of Earth shows. Five parts were in 2006 in First shown. A second season with another five parts aired in early 2007.

Forty camera teams filmed in 200 remarkable locations around the world over five years. So are piranhas in the Amazon , glaciers or the highest waterfalls in the world shown. According to self-promotion, unprecedented pictures are presented. In addition to its breadth, the series is also characterized by spectacular images, which have only been made possible by massive spending, the latest technology and the high level of commitment, sometimes by specialized camera teams. For example, the attack of a great white shark on a seal is shown in extreme slow motion, which makes the attack technique and strength of the predator clear. The series is originally commented by David Attenborough .

Due to the high production costs of the series filmed in high definition, broadcasters around the world had to team up to create and market them. Planet Earth is an international co-production of the BBC with Discovery Channel , NHK from Japan , the Canadian CBC and the German broadcasters WDR and BR . In addition, as in the previous series Our Blue Planet , the material from the series - including unpublished sequences - was used to produce a movie that was released in 2007. The film, Our Earth , ran in Germany on February 7, 2008.

German versions ARD + Universum / ORF

The spokesman for the German-language ARD version of the five episodes shown first is the actor and voice actor Claus Wilcke . The German-language Universum / ORF version has the same images, but is spoken by Franz Robert Wagner with a slightly different text (translation tolerance). The second season, which was shown on ARD, is commented on by Norbert Langer . The first season of the third programs was later broadcast with Norbert Langer's commentary.

The theme song of the ARD version is the song Hoppipolla by Sigur Rós . The main theme was played by the BBC orchestra. The German version has been shortened by approx. 5 minutes per episode compared to the original.

Episodes

The documentation Planet Earth is divided into 11 episodes of 45 minutes each on DVD. Due to the television broadcast, two seasons of five and six episodes were formed. The total running time is 495 minutes with an additional 280 minutes of bonus material. Compared to the original series, which includes eleven parts, was absent from the broadcast of Planet Earth in the first result jungle worlds ( Jungles ). This would have been episode 8, but the original order was not followed. The missing episode has already been broadcast in some third-party programs .

German titles on Blu-ray and HD DVD in original length

On January 25, 2008 polyband released the complete series in uncut version in high definition on Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD . Since the German synchronization of ARD is only 45 minutes per episode, there is no German commentary for a short time.

In addition to the episodes from the ARD series, the collection also contains episode 8 ( Dschungelwelten ) on disc 3 and a bonus disc with the two films Desert Lions and Snow Leopards in English with German subtitles. In addition, there are cave worlds (part 4) and desert worlds (part 5), contrary to the ARD broadcast, in the correct order.

Name duplication

The series is not to be confused with the series “Planet Erde”, which is broadcast at night on Bavarian television , in front of the night loop , for about 5 minutes and describes a regional area of ​​the earth with music without commentary.

From November to December 2016 the BBC ran a six-part sequel to the series entitled Planet Earth II . The speaker is again David Attenborough. The music comes from Hans Zimmer .
