Pokémon Black Edition and Pokémon White Edition (known in Japan as Pocket Monsters Black ( ポ ケ ッ ト モ ン ス タ ー ブ ブ ラ ッ ク ) and Pocket Monsters White ( ポ ケ ッ ト モ ン ス タ ー ホ ワ イ ト ) are fifth generation games in the Pokémon RPG series , developed and published by Nintendo game series Freak . The two editions differ only slightly from each other.

World and action

Pokémon Black Edition and Pokémon White Edition are set in the Unall region , which is based on New York City . This is the first time that a main series Pokémon game is not set in a region of Japan.

In this game, just like in its predecessors, you play a young coach, whose goal is to defeat the region's criminal organization, in this case Team Plasma, and to become the region's league champion. The game begins in a village called Avenitia , where the protagonist and his two friends Bell and Cheren live. There, Professor Esche, who also lives in this city, hands them a starter Pokémon, where the player can choose between Ottaro, a water Pokémon, Floink, a fire Pokémon, and Serpifeu, a plant Pokémon, and a Pokédex. As in the previous series, the professor asks the protagonist and his friends to complete the Pokédex. Then they travel to Einall and after some time meet the criminal organization Team Plasma, whose goal it seems to be to free all Pokémon from humans. Its chairmen are its king N, who can talk to Pokémon, and seven wise men. The protagonist now repeatedly thwarted the plans of this criminal organization and also wins all eight arena medals. After winning the seventh order, N awakens a legendary Dragon Pokémon, depending on the edition, with the help of a special stone. In the black edition this is Zekrom, in the white edition it is Reshiram. The player receives the other stone from the Septerna City museum. After the protagonist then sets off for the Pokémon League and defeats the top four, he meets N and the champ, where N has already defeated the champ. Then suddenly the castle of N rises behind the Pokémon League. After N has set off there, the protagonist follows him. Now the protagonist can also awaken the other Legendary Pokémon. After the player has won the fight against N, G-Cis, the chairman of the wise men and actual boss of Team Plasma, reveals that it was his actual goal to subdue the Unall region and begins a final fight against the protagonist. After the player has won this too, he can convince N that it is not right to separate the Pokémon from the people. G-C sharp escapes with the help of the Finstrio. The game's storyline ends and the credits begin.

This is the first and so far only time in the history of the main Pokémon series that the plot of the game ends without having first defeated the champ. However, this is possible after the action in league rematches.

Gameplay and innovations

In Pokémon Black and White , the basic game mechanics have not changed from their predecessors. It's still based on catching and training Pokémon, but this time the main story only features new Pokémon. For the first time, many 3D graphics have been used, for example the Pokémon move continuously during a fight and you can see them in their full size. Another new feature is the introduction of seasons within the game that change exactly after one month. The change of the seasons also results in a change in the game world. For example, new paths become passable through mountains of snow. In addition, the Pokémon such as Sesokitz and Kronjuwild change their appearance depending on the season. In addition, depending on the season, different Pokémon can be caught. The possibilities of catching wild Pokémon have also been expanded, for example by occasionally encountering wobbling bushes in the tall grass, in which mostly rare Pokémon can be found. Now there is also the possibility to combine attacks of his Pokémon in two-person or three-way battles, such as the attack Cross Thunder from the legendary Pokémon Zekrom with the attack Cross Flame from the other legendary Pokémon Reshiram, which together then form an even more powerful attack. In the Pokémon League, you can choose which of the top 4 to fight against first. With the "C-GEAR" function, you can now trade and fight without having to go to a Pokémon Center.

There are also two new types of combat, namely the three-way fight and the row fight. In three-way battles, each trainer sends three Pokémon into battle. The Pokémon on the left and right with most attacks can only hit the Pokémon opposite and the one in the middle. To change positions you have to spend one lap. Three Pokémon are also sent into battle in a row battle. Here, however, only one of these Pokémon attacks in each round, which the player can freely choose. Likewise, only this Pokémon can be hit by the opponent. So you can switch between these three Pokémon without consuming a round.

Development and sales figures

On January 29, 2010, the Pokémon Company announced that they would develop a new game in the Pokémon RPG series for the Nintendo DS and bring it to market in the same year. The editions are to be subjected to some fundamental changes, among other things. On February 10th, the first Pokémon of the fifth generation were revealed with the Pokémon Zorua and Zoroark . Finally, on April 9, the Black and White editions were officially announced . Some time later, moving images of the two games were published for the first time on the Japanese show Pokémon Sunday . These show a short tour through a city with a 3D view. It can also be seen that the camera will behave differently depending on the location. At the beginning of May, the starter Pokémon were revealed in an issue of CoroCoro Comic magazine . On May 28, the cover Pokémon Reshiram and Zekrom were introduced worldwide, as well as release dates for North America and Europe. Some time later it was also confirmed that with Professor Esche for the first time a female person would take on the role of the Pokémon professor.

In the following months, new Pokémon were presented at irregular intervals. The first pictures were mostly published on the TV shows Pokémon Sunday and Oha Suta as well as on CoroCoro magazine. In addition, some Pokémon were spotted and photographed for the first time in a demo version of the black and white Pokémon edition. In isolated cases, Pokémon merchandising drafts, a concept sketch for the TV series, and promotional material have also been inadvertently leaked, also revealing the looks of some new Pokémon. All 156 new fifth-generation Pokémon have been known since the games first appeared.

A manga series by Hidenori Kusaka and Satoshi Yamamoto was published from 2013 to 2014 for the game , which reached nine volumes. It was published in German by Planet Manga under the title Pokémon Black and White . In addition, the 14th season is dedicated to the anime series Pokémon of the Black and White Edition.

Sales figures

The Black Edition and the White Edition sold more than 2.6 million times in the first two days. This made them the fastest-selling Pokémon games until the successor Pokémon X and Y were released. In Europe, the games sold a total of one million times in the first ten days.

reception

Pokémon Black and White Editions have received a lot of positive reviews. Both games at Metacritic have a Metascore of 87%. In GameRankings, on the other hand, the ratings are different, but just as positive: Pokémon Black has an average rating of 85.88% and Pokémon White has an average rating of 87.24%.

Long-time fans accepted the editions rather negatively. Above all, they criticized the abstract design of the almost 150 new Pokémon, which are the only beings you encounter in the game until they are played through for the first time, as well as the change in long-term gameplay elements such as the experience point system, which is now based on the levels of the Pokémon oriented; the worthlessness of play money and items that had added value in previous games and the comparatively low capture rate of many Pokémon. In addition, the very dramatic, but low-interactive plot was criticized compared to its predecessors.

2 Pocket Monsters White 2 ) are the special editions of Pokémon Black and White Edition and parts of the main series. For the first time, two special editions appeared instead of just one. They were first shown on February 26, 2012 as part of the Pokémon Smash! announced. The titles were released in Japan on June 23, 2012, in North America on 7 and in Europe on October 12, 2012.

On its release weekend in Japan, the game sold more than 1.6 million copies. This special edition also includes a manga series that was released as Pocket Monster - BW Hen between 2011 and 2013 and reached four volumes. It was drawn by Kōsaku Anakubo . Since January 2018 it appears as Pokémon - Black 2 White 2 in German on Planet Manga.

action

For the second time since the Pokémon Emerald Edition , Pokémon Black Edition 2 and White Edition 2 have a completely different storyline than the corresponding main edition. The plot takes place two years after the main plot of the original games. As the new chairman of Team Plasma , G-Cis takes on the role of the main antagonist. The game starts this time in the newly added city Eventura City, where the new protagonist and his friend and rival live. This time her appearance is very sporty and precocious. The rival's name is preset to Matisse, but can be freely chosen. Matisse sets off on the Pokémon journey to get back a Pokémon that Team Plasma has stolen from its sister.

At the beginning of the game, after a call from Professor Esche Bell, the rival from the Pokémon Black and Pokémon White editions, hands over the starter Pokémon, which have not changed compared to their predecessor. Bell is now Professor Esche's assistant. Now the protagonist sets off on his journey through the Einall region, where he meets Team Plasma for the first time a little later. After the player has thwarted his plan, he challenges the first Pokémon arena, with Cheren representing a rival from the predecessor, the arena manager. The protagonist then travels to the Einall region, thwarting Team Plasma's plans from time to time. After arriving in Stratos City, the largest city in the region, the player meets the researcher Achromas, who is later found out to be a member of Team Plasma. After the fifth Pokémon arena, the protagonist enters the plasma frigate for the first time, a ship that is the headquarters of Team Plasma. Then it becomes quiet for Team Plasma, until they attack the city of Twindrake City after winning the seventh Arena Order with the now flying plasma frigate and freeze it with the power of the legendary Pokémon Kyurem, which they have brought under their control. Team Plasma asks the arena manager to hand over the DNA wedge , which is then stolen. While searching for Team Plasma, the player finds the Plasma Frigate, but is unable to free Kyurem in order to thwart Team Plasma's plans. A little later, however, the player can find the plasma frigate in the giant grotto. There the protagonist finds Matisse's sister's Pokémon, which has since evolved. After Achromas is defeated, the player can convince him that only the connection between the Trainer and Pokémon can unleash the full power of the Pokémon. G-Cis then flees with Kyurem. The player now follows G-C sharp, whereupon Kyurem attacks the protagonist at the behest of G-C sharp. N, the antagonist from the predecessor, can save the protagonist with the help of his legendary Pokémon. Zekrom takes this role in Pokémon Black Version 2, while Reshiram takes his place in Pokémon White Version 2. Thereupon, G-Cis merges with the help of the DNA wedge Kyurem with the legendary Pokémon von N, depending on the edition, to form the Black Kyurem (in Pokémon Black Edition 2) or the White Kyurem (in Pokémon White Edition 2). This attacks you and must now be defeated by the player. After this is done, a G-C sharp calls out to fight. If the player has also defeated this, the protagonist finally breaks into the Pokémon League and defeats the champ Lilia, who was the arena manager in the white edition. The plot then ends and the credits begin.

Innovations compared to the predecessor

As in the special editions of the Pokémon game series, the innovations are limited, although most of the innovations have been added relative to earlier special editions. For example, the list of Pokémon was changed according to Einall-Pokédex, so that it now includes 301 Pokémon from all five game generations that have appeared up to that point. A function called Habitat List has been added, which can be used to determine which Pokémon can be found in a certain area. There are some new cities, for example the home village of the protagonists, Eventura City, is on the left, previously uninhabited edge of the Einall region, as is a Hollywood-style film studio called Pokéwood. Where there was still a freezer container in the predecessor, there is now a competition hall, which is the venue for the <PKMN World Tournament. In the PKMN World Tournament you fight in the KO system for the title against the arena leaders and champs of all five generations. In some of the new cities, new arenas with new arena leaders [Cheren (Normal Type), Mica (Poison Type), Benson (Water Type)] were established, while the arenas in Orion City, Septerna City, and Nevaio City were closed. The new champ of the Pokémon League is Lilia, who was the arena manager in the previous version (only the white edition). In addition to Kyurem, Boreos, Voltolos, Demeteros and Keldeo also have new forms. The new forms of Kyurem are achieved through the stay of Zekrom or Reshiram in the team and the insertion of the DNA wedge. The black Kyurem learns the Frostvolt attack and the white Kyurem learns the Breath of Frost attack. Keldeo's new form is called the resolute form. Keldeo takes on this form when it learns the Myst Sword attack . Boreos, Voltolos and Demeteros switch between their animal spirit form and their incarnation form through the item True Mirror.

reception

Pokémon Black Edition 2 and White Edition 2 received mostly average ratings. Both games at Metacritic have a Metascore of 80%. In GameRankings , the ratings are similar, but again different, so Pokémon Black Edition 2 has an average rating of 81.31% and Pokémon White Version 2 has an average rating of 80.71%.
