Enfield is a town in Penobscot County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there lived 1607 inhabitants in 937 households on an area of 85.47 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Enfield has a total area of 85.47 km², of which 71.85 km² are land and 13.62 km² consist of water .
Geographical location
Enfield is centrally located in Penobscot County. The western boundary of the area is formed by the Penobscot River , which flows in a southerly direction . The eastern part is taken by Cold Stream Pond . The surface is level, only in the northeast rises the 161 m high Grays Hill .

history
Settlement in Enfield began around 1820. The area was initially called Cold Stream . Enfield was organized as a town on January 31, 1835.
Previously, the area was also known as River Township No. 1 (“belonging to the First Range”) and Treat's Tract or Cold Stream .
To connect Enfield with Howland, the Enfield – Howland line was opened in 1869 . It was shut down and dismantled in 1963, today it is a hiking trail. Enfield is served by the Bangor – Vanceboro railway line .

traffic
The US Highway 2 parallel in a north-south direction to the Penobscot River along the western edge of the Town. The Main State Route 155 performs Howland coming east to Cold Stream Pond and the Village Enfield. There it swings in a northerly direction and at this point Main State Route 188 branches off in a southerly direction .

There are no medical facilities or hospitals in Enfield. Closest facilities for Enfield residents are in Howland.

Enfield is part of School Administrative Unit 31 with Burlington, Lowell, Edinburg, Enfield, Howland, Maxfield, Passadumkeag and Seboeis. The following schools are available in the school district:
- Penobscot Valley High School in Howland, with classes from 9th to 12th grade
- Hichborn Middle School in Howland, with school classes from 6th to 8th grade
- Enfield Station School in Enfield, with school classes from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade
