Settlement in Enfield began around 1820. The area was initially called Cold Stream . Enfield was organized as a town on January 31, 1835.

Previously, the area was also known as River Township No. 1 (“belonging to the First Range”) and Treat's Tract or Cold Stream .

To connect Enfield with Howland, the Enfield – Howland line was opened in 1869 . It was shut down and dismantled in 1963, today it is a hiking trail. Enfield is served by the Bangor – Vanceboro railway line .

The US Highway 2 parallel in a north-south direction to the Penobscot River along the western edge of the Town. The Main State Route 155 performs Howland coming east to Cold Stream Pond and the Village Enfield.
