Seoul Dynasty is a Korean professional Overwatch Esports team based in Seoul , South Korea , currently competing in the Inaugural Overwatch League (OWL) season. Seoul Dynasty is one of twelve founding members of the OWL and was the sixth franchise whose branding was officially announced by Activision Blizzard. The team and the Seoul franchise for the OWL are owned by KSV Esports, a company founded by Kevin Chou .
history
Seoul was one of the first seven locations to feature in Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch League (OWL) on July 12, 2017 under the umbrella of Kabam co-founder Kevin Chou. The team announced the acquisition of the players and coaching staff for South Korean Overwatch team Lunatic-Hai on August 22, 2017, becoming the first OWL team to publicly list players. On September 13th of this year, the team signed Kim "nuGget" Yo-han from the South Korean esports team MVP in a coaching position for the team. On October 22, they signed three more players in their roster, Jae-mo "xepheR" Koo, Sang-beom "Munchkin" Byeon and Byung-sun "Fleta" Kim, from the American esports team Cloud9, the European esports Team Laser Kittenz, and the South Korean eSports team Flash Lux.
On October 26, 2017, the OWL revealed the name of the franchise, the Seoul Dynasty. A day later, the team announced in a roster preview video that Seok-woo "Wekeed" Choi had joined the team. On November 4th, 2017, after details of the OWL's inaugural season were released at BlizzCon, Joon-hyuk "Bunny" Chae and Dae-kuk "KuKi" Kim were revealed as by South Korean esports teams Lunatic-Hai and MVP Space the last two members of the Seoul Dynasty for the OWL's inaugural season.
Opening season (2017-present)
The Seoul Dynasty was considered the favorite in the first season of the OWL game. In the league's preseason, the team took first place among the eleven participating teams and won all three games. The team scored wins against the Shanghai Dragons, Houston Outlaws and New York Excelsior, cementing their position as favorites to win the first season.
Branding
Since the Overwatch League required the use of separate OWL-specific and geolocated brands for participating organizations, the Seoul Dynasty's branding is completely separate from its parent organization KSV Esports. On October 26, 2017, in addition to the unveiling of the team name, the organization's branding was also presented.
Surname
Kevin Chou, owner of the team through his venture KSV Esports, said they chose the team's name because it reflected previous success in the Overwatch APEX tournament series and won two titles, as well as the historical significance of Seoul. Korea as the seat of the Joseon Dynasty. Regarding other names that have been discussed for the organization, Kevin Chou said, "We considered some very Korean names like Haechi and some more general names like Tiger, but ultimately we decided on the dynasty that symbolized all we wanted to represent and universally appealing. The players were involved in the whole process and they were very happy with the way it all came out - the name, the colors, the logo, the meaning. "
logo
The logo for the Seoul Dynasty shows a tiger in the team's colors. On the tiger's forehead is a stylized version of the Korean character '王' ('wáng'), which means king, in reference to the name of the team, the competition history and the importance of the city they represent, Seoul, in Korean History.
Colours
The official team colors are black, gold and white. The gold color is meant to highlight the theme of royalties in the brand's previous successes and the core roster in competitive Overwatch.
