Anno 1800 is a building strategy game set in the time of the industrial revolution in the 19th century . It was developed by the German developer Ubisoft Blue Byte Mainz (formerly Related Designs ) and published by the French publisher Ubisoft .

Anno 1800 is the seventh part of the Anno series and the successor to Anno 2205 , which appeared in 2015 . Anno 1800 was first presented and announced to the public at the Gamescom games fair in 2017. It hit the market on April 16, 2019, seven weeks later than announced in August 2018.

Game scenario

After the last two titles Anno 2205 and Anno 2070 had a future scenario as their content, the Anno series goes back to the past with Anno 1800 . Anno 1800 is set in the time of the industrial revolution in the 19th century.

Anno Union

As part of the announcement of the game, the so-called Anno Union was also launched. Developer Ubisoft Blue Byte Mainz plans to give committed players the opportunity to influence the development of the upcoming game as part of the Anno Union. For example, insights into the development and early gameplay should be provided and upcoming features can be selected in part by the player base. In order to enable the players to influence the game at all, the game was announced at a comparatively early stage of development.

Gameplay

Like the penultimate offshoot of the series, Anno 2070 , the game has two different game modes. On the one hand the campaign, which follows a narrow storyline, and on the other hand the free game mode, which can be freely played through predefined or user-defined settings. In the free game mode there is also the option of not setting any conditions for victory, which makes an infinity game possible. In general, the aim of a free game is mostly to reach a certain level of civilization or to destroy the computer-controlled opponents by military means.

Extensions

Even before the publication of which was an anarchist - DLC announced for the year 2019, which expands the game with new content in the form of orders, items, and more personalization options. On April 15, 2019, BlueByte announced extensive post-launch game content at Anno Union, including the three DLCs "Sunken Treasures", "Botanica" and "The Passage" as well as cosmetic items. The three expansions add new sessions in Europe and the Arctic, a botanical garden and ornaments to the game. At the same time it was announced that the game would be continuously updated with new buildings and features in order to respond to the feedback within the Anno Union. Season Pass 1 bundles all three expansions and enables further personalization options. The Anarchist DLC is not part of Season Pass 1. With the DLC “Palaces of Power” one of the three new expansions announced for 2020 was released on March 24, 2020. “Palaces of Power”, “Bountiful Harvest” and “Land of Lions” are combined in Season Pass 2.

The slavery and colonialism issues, which were only marginally dealt with in the game, sparked discussions about the history of the game. Long before the publication, Blue Bytes Creative Director Dirk Riegert said that slavery in the 19th century was no longer relevant at the time and that it would appear but not play a central role. He justified this with the fact that the players could feel uncomfortable with such game mechanics. In fact, references to the subject can only be found in description texts in the game. The historian Jürgen Zimmerer criticized the fact that in the year 1800, as a historical simulation, the topic of slavery would virtually be faded out of history. Felix Zimmermann from the Working Group on History and Digital Games indicated that a game of this range could influence the history of a society. Jürgen Zimmerer also referred to the Jornaleros and Obreros occurring in the game, i.e. the population of the colonies opened up by the player , which would practically have to do forced labor .
