Anno Online was a browser game and the first part of the Anno computer game series that was based on the free-to-play model. The game was developed by Blue Byte on the basis of the Settlers online engine and presented on August 15, 2012 at Gamescom 2012. The open beta version started on February 26, 2013. The beta status was lifted on September 26th, but the further development of the game was assured. On October 18, 2016, Blue Byte announced that the game would no longer be developed. On November 29, 2017, Blue Byte announced the final closure of the Anno Online website, forum, social media channels and browser game. This happened on January 31, 2018. The app "Anno: Create a Kingdom!" but can still be used.

Gameplay

Although Anno Online , unlike its predecessors, is played in the web browser , the gameplay is very similar to its predecessors. The graphic style is reminiscent of Anno 1404 . Here, too, it is important to explore foreign islands, to build up complex economic cycles and to take care of the needs of the population. In Anno Online every player starts with the same starting conditions - so the starting island has the same requirements for every player. The player can gradually reveal the card further, which costs time and resources. Unlike its predecessors, time cannot be sped up without paying with real money.

Anno Online completely dispenses with AI opponents and largely without military elements. PvE battles have been established that can be fought on a rock-paper-scissors-principle. You can only trade with other players at a higher level. It is not possible to rotate the map , but pressing the space bar will hide individual buildings so that buildings can be placed more easily.

reception

Reviews

In general, Anno Online received consistently positive reviews. Above all, the detailed graphics and the harmonious atmosphere of the browser adaptation of Anno 1404 convinced in tests. The operation has been well adapted to the browser version and numerous auxiliary functions, such as moving buildings, have been specially developed for Anno Online . However, some functions, such as rotating the view, are not available in Anno Online .

The slow pace at which the game progressed was rated negatively. This speed can only be accelerated by the premium currency rubies, which can be purchased for real money or earned by leveling up and fulfilling orders.
