Anno 1701 , in English-speaking countries also 1701 AD , is a building strategy game and the third part of the Anno series . The game was developed by the German studio Related Designs and published by Sunflowers in October 2006 .

The game principle is based on that of the predecessor. The player is sent to a remote, island-rich region with the aim of building a metropolis. In order to supply its citizens, it is necessary to build up a stable cycle of goods. The technical side, which now has been revised on fundamental three-dimensional graphics and Dolby Digital - 5.1 sets tone.

The game was largely viewed positively by the trade press. Critics praised the high quality of the graphics, which is outstanding among the building games. The gameplay was also rated as very good in many cases. The game was also well received by buyers. In Germany it became the best-selling game of 2006. In October 2007 an expansion with the name Der Fluch des Drachen was released .

Gameplay

General

Anno 1701 deals with the discovery and development of territories in the New World . The player takes on the role of a seafarer who, on behalf of his queen, settles previously unknown areas. The aim of the game is to build a functioning city and its constant supply of consumer goods. In addition, the player can set other goals in a game, such as reaching a certain asset level or militarily knocking down competitors.

At the beginning of a game, the player starts either with offices on any island or with an expedition ship. First he tries to build a small settlement on an island and to get basic goods and resources. Up to three computer-controlled competitors try to gain a foothold in the game world in the same way.

Merchant shipping is critical to progress in the game

This game world is made up of numerous islands. Most of the islands can be settled by the players. However, some of these islands have been settled by alien peoples or pirates from the start . Foreign peoples, like a resident trader, primarily serve as trading partners. Pirates are hostile from the start and attack ships of the player and other colonialists.

As the game progresses, it becomes increasingly necessary to colonize other islands, as most products require raw materials that can only be found in a few places, for example gold or diamonds. Since other players are also dependent on these raw materials, conflicts can arise over the disputed islands, which lead to a war.

Economic simulation

The main focus of the game is to build and maintain an economic cycle. The player's task is to supply his population with consumer goods . To do this, he has to set up a large number of production chains. At the beginning, the city consists only of simple huts where pioneers live. They only ask for food and a village center. In the course of the game, the pioneers develop into settlers, citizens, merchants and finally aristocrats. Every level up comes with benefits. This increases tax income significantly, makes more valuable goods available and unlocks new buildings. However, with each level up, the number of needs of the population is steadily increasing. If a necessary need is not met, the representatives of the affected shift are dissatisfied and leave the city. As a rule, there are also uprisings among the people, which sometimes seriously damage their own city.

All buildings, ships and troops cause running costs . In order to achieve a positive economic record, the player essentially has two options. The main source of income is taxes. The player can determine the amount of taxes himself, but the influx of new residents decreases as the tax burden increases. The second mainstay of the economy is trade. The player can offer goods for sale at his offices and carry out trade missions to foreign islands himself. This component has been restricted in its functionality compared to Anno 1503 , because the player can no longer set purchase prices himself, but pays and receives given standard prices.

As one's own settlement progresses, the number of goods demanded by the population and the complexity of the necessary production chains increase. The starting island can only meet the raw material requirements for building materials at the beginning, as the deposits are limited. The supply of the population is only rudimentary. Many agricultural products, such as tobacco or cocoa, require correspondingly fertile soils. It is therefore necessary to develop new islands early on. In order to ensure the constant supply of businesses and residential buildings, the player can set up trade routes. Trade routes automate the movement of goods between islands.

In order to improve the productivity of their own operations and to activate new buildings, the players have various researches at their disposal. Research can be initiated and carried out in educational institutions.

Urban construction

The player is responsible for the structural development of his settlement, so he must erect accommodation, production buildings and infrastructure.

Accommodation will be built around a village center. This serves as the center of the settlement and as a meeting place for the population. Every now and then special guests like a band of musicians, an inventor , a blacksmith or a captain arrive there . They bring the player certain bonuses, such as increased tax revenue or accelerated research. Furthermore, the village center fulfills a demand of the population, the need for community. Later on, there are other demands that have to be met by buildings, such as education, entertainment and political power. If all the needs of a section of the population are met, the player can let the residents move up to the next level of society.

Production buildings include farms, mines, and factories. Farms often require special fertility, mines corresponding raw materials. After the construction work begins automatically in the buildings. If special raw materials are required for production, the buildings only work as long as they are supplied with these raw materials.

Market houses are used to transport goods within a settlement. These must have a road connection to the production facilities they are supposed to supply. The situation is similar with fire brigade stations and medical practices. The player can build city walls, turrets and fortresses to defend his settlement.

Interaction with other players

In the regions that the player explores, he meets computer-controlled competitors, locals, traders and pirates who can be friendly or hostile to him.

Competitors try to build a functioning settlement like the player. Up to three can take part in a game. They have individually designed profiles that define their economic, diplomatic and military skills. The player can trade, form alliances or wage war with his competitors.

Natives are resident in the form of four cultures, the Iroquois , Chinese , Indian, and Aztecs . They inhabit small islands and each operate a trading post. Through intensive trade with the foreign peoples one gains reputation and over time can acquire the colonial goods ivory , jade , furs and talismans necessary for the rise of one's own population to aristocrats .

Pirates are initially hostile to the players and attack their ships. The player can make deals with them if he has earned enough prestige with the pirate leader Ramirez. To do this, he has to prove his combat strength in sea battles and sink numerous ships. Alternatively, he can destroy their base with ground troops.

The free trader has a trading base in the region and travels to all players' offices. At certain intervals he writes out orders, such as rescue missions, which are rewarded with money and goods. All players are in permanent trading relationships with the dealer.

The queen supports the player at the beginning of a game with loans and troops. If the player and his settlement reach the highest population level, the aristocrats, the queen begins to demand tributes from the player. If the player complies with her demands, she ultimately grants him independence. If the player refuses to pay tribute, the queen sends several fleets against the player. The player can also achieve independence through multiple victories over the royal troops.

Warfare

The warfare in Anno 1701 is divided into two areas, war at sea and war on land. At sea, players fight with warships, which can disrupt the opposing economic cycle by attacking enemy merchant ships.

On land, players fight with a limited selection of troops that includes artillery, infantry and cavalry. Troops are transported to enemy islands by ships and deposited there. Then you can gradually gain control of the area and the buildings of the opponent by destroying the opposing market building.

As soon as a player has taken over the main island of an AI opponent, he automatically gives up and withdraws from the island world.

Lodge activity

A novelty of Anno 1701 is the box activity with which you can spy on and sabotage your fellow players. For example, thieves , saboteurs or revolutionaries are available . The player can send these agents to enemy islands in order to disrupt the development of the enemy. There is a certain risk that the mission will fail and be discovered. This damages diplomatic relations with the player concerned. A corresponding lodge building is required for lodge activities. Most activities, however, have to be researched by the player.

Special actions and the skills of foreign peoples play a special role in the system of lodge activities. The Iron Ration , Demolitionist and Crusade are not directed against an adversary, but give bonuses to the player who uses them. The abilities of a foreign race can be accessed if a player has allied with them.

Game modes

The central game mode is the endless game . In this game mode, the player competes against up to three computer opponents in a randomly generated island environment and tries to build his settlement.

The multiplayer part is based on this mode, in which up to four human players compete against each other. The basic gameplay is the same as in the endless game. One difference is that the dealer orders are advertised globally, which creates competition between the players. Furthermore, the possibility to speed up the game time has been removed for technical reasons. A chat function has been added for communication between the players.

The playground is all about building. The player gains control of large islands and can build buildings as they wish. The economic cycle is not relevant here, so it is all about the artistic design of a city. However, not all buildings are available.

Finally, Anno 1701 offers ten separate scenarios. These tell brief background stories and usually deal with the construction of a settlement under special conditions or the management of military operations. In these scenarios, the player's freedom of action is often restricted in favor of a given course of action.

GUI

The user interface of Anno 1701 is reduced to the essentials and kept as clear as possible. There are only two permanent elements, a mini map that shows the explored parts of the island world and a financial overview that shows the current fortune of the player. If necessary, this can be expanded to include an exact balance.

Further overviews are displayed if required. If the player selects any object, an information window appears with basic data about the selected object. If the camera is aimed at an island, the stocks of building materials, the fertility and the raw materials available on the island are displayed. If the player selects a house, an overview of the needs of the residents and a slider with which the tax level can be set appear.

The camera shows the action from a bird's eye view . It can be rotated freely and brought up close to the action. This means moving away from the isometric perspective of the earlier parts.

In 2003 a successor to Anno 1503 was announced. This was given the title Anno War and should focus on warfare. Unlike its predecessors, the game was commissioned from the studio Related Designs, which is known for strategy games. The responsible development team was significantly enlarged, the number of employees rose from ten to 25. However, this project was discontinued in its early development. Screenshots or other demo material were not published.

Instead, Related Designs was commissioned to develop a game based on the building game concept of earlier Anno titles. This title was initially codenamed Anno 3. Due to a dispute between Sunflowers and the developer of the first Anno games, Max Design, Related Designs had no technical basis for the new game. Therefore, the studio had to develop the new title from scratch.

In September 2004, Related Designs presented a first prototype. The focus of the presentation was on the new three-dimensional graphics that set the game apart from its predecessors. Technically, it was partly based on an earlier title from the studio, No Man's Land , but was largely a new development. Special features of the new engine include normal mapping , bump mapping , a fine particle display and a detailed water display. The game also relies on advanced techniques in the area of ​​light and shadow display. To improve the speed, support for multiple processor cores has been implemented in the game . In addition, numerous shaders were built into the game in order to achieve a good display on as many hardware configurations as possible.

On May 9, 2005, the publisher Sunflowers announced that the game would be called Anno 1701 and is expected to appear at the end of 2006. Content-related details about the game were hardly revealed. Instead, the manufacturer named the budget, which at eight million euros was the highest for a German video game to date. In mid-May, the developer announced that the game would be exhibited at the E3 game fair . A first trailer appeared shortly afterwards .

During the development, the publisher Sunflowers carried out several surveys among registered Anno players about various new game elements. In the summer of 2006, the game was opened to beta testers.

On August 7, 2006, the publisher specified the planned release date for October 26. Shortly afterwards, the budget was corrected upwards to ten million. A second trade fair presentation took place in the same year at the Games Convention in Leipzig. An official trailer followed a few days later.

Parallel to Anno 1701 , a mobile game called Anno mobile was developed. Related Designs worked with the companies Keyfactor , Twistbox Games and Kaasa Solution . The game consists of mini-games based on the style of Anno . In this mobile game, players can earn bonus coins that give the player advantages in the main game.

publication

The game went gold on October 6th . With that it was finished and prepared for delivery. Twenty days later, on October 26th, it appeared nationwide on the German market. The game could be purchased in Saturn stores the day before . The game appeared in a simple and limited version. The limited version includes elegant packaging, a book with concept drawings, postcards and other additional material. The release followed on October 30th in North America and on November 3rd in the rest of Europe.

On February 16, 2007, Sunflowers announced that an expansion to Anno 1701 would be released. This received the title The Curse of the Dragon . In April 2007, the French company Ubisoft announced that it would take over Sunflowers. With this, the group also acquired the rights to the Anno series and a stake in the Related Designs studio.

In December 2008, Ubisoft released the Anno 1701 King Edition . This included the main game along with the expansion The Curse of the Dragon . In the summer of 2014 a collection consisting of Anno 1701 and its two successors, Anno 1404 and Anno 2070, appeared in stores.

Anno 1701 received good ratings from the trade press, which were particularly high in German-speaking countries. Metacritic calculated a meta rating of 79 out of 100 points for the Windows version.

Marcel Kleffmann from 4Players described Anno 1701 as the best building game in a long time. The structure of the endless mode is convincing due to a demanding settlement structure, dealer orders and well-designed computer players. Only the early stages lack variety. The multiplayer mode is burdened with major flaws, which lacks a time acceleration function and balanced balancing.

Dan Adams from the online magazine IGN Entertainment also described the game as a success. The economic simulation is demanding and complex. However, there is a lack of good overviews that give the player detailed information about the running costs of individual buildings and units. In combination with the growth of the settlements, this makes it difficult to keep a positive balance over a longer period of time. The military part, on the other hand, is disappointing because it is too simple and superficial. The author, on the other hand, rates the graphics and sound of the game as consistently of high quality.

Markus Schwerdtel tested the game for GameStar magazine and gave it one of the highest ratings. He praised the technical advances made by the series. The presentation of relevant information through detailed graphic effects, which show the satisfaction of the residents and the productivity of the workers, was also successful. Anno 1701 is also convincing in the other areas . The author only criticizes the limited number of troops and the slight problems finding the way in ships. In addition, the level of difficulty is sometimes too low for experienced players.

Stefan Weiss from PC Games magazine described the game world as detailed and inviting. The game is also convincing in terms of play with its wealth of tasks. However, it is difficult to keep track of one's own economy, especially later in the game. Furthermore, the game lacks a varied campaign. Nevertheless, Anno 1701 is one of the best building games on the market. The multiplayer mode was tested in a separate test. This suffered from the lack of the ability to accelerate the game. As a result, there are too often long phases of waiting until goods bottlenecks are overcome. The build-up phase in particular is tiring as a result. Equal opportunities are also not always given. What stands out positively, however, are the dealer orders, which would ensure a varied competition between the players.

GameSpot's Brett Todd rated the game lower than other magazines. He described the economic simulation as extremely successful. They convince with their simply structured and clear structure, which is supported by short menus. A weakness of the game is the strong inclusion of the military aspect, which is almost inevitable in the late stages of games. Because warfare is one of the weakest points in the game.

Awards and nominations

Anno 1701 received several nominations and awards. At the 2006 German Developer Award, the game won in six categories, including best German game , best graphics and best level design . It was nominated for three more, for example best cut scenes.

Sales figures

At the start of sales, 450,000 copies of Anno 1701 were delivered to the trade. Around 200,000 units were sold within two weeks of publication. In early 2007, Ubisoft reported that more than 400,000 copies of the game had been sold.

Compared to other games, Anno 1701 was one of the most successful games on the German market. It took fourth place in the German sales charts in the first week. In the annual charts of the Society for Consumer Research for 2006, Anno 1701 took first place as the best-selling game in Germany.

The dragon's curse

On October 25, 2007, the add-on The Curse of the Dragon was released. It adds a new campaign to the main game. In eleven missions, the player secures an Asian artifact from the warlord Diego Del Torro. Furthermore, new jewelry buildings and four new computer opponents have been added. In addition, The Curse of the Dragon comes with a map editor that players can use to develop their own island worlds.

Critics praised that the expansion offered a large and well-designed campaign. However, they criticized the fact that the core component of the main game, the endless mode, is hardly supplemented.

Media based on the game

Console offshoot

In June 2007 Disney Interactive released an offshoot of the Anno series for the Nintendo DS mobile console. This was developed by the German studio Keen Games . The game draws on numerous elements from Anno 1701 , mostly in a simplified form. In return, the game offers its own campaign.

The trade press rated the game as convincing. The developers received particular praise for the fact that the game does not look like a simple port from Anno 1701 , but rather as a title carefully tailored to the Nintendo console.

Just a few days after the publication of Anno 1701 , Related Designs announced that there would be a successor. In 2009 it finally appeared under the title Anno 1404 . In terms of play, it is essentially based on its predecessor. However, some well-known elements received major revisions, such as the scenery, graphics, the military system and the order system. The construction of monuments and the establishment of oriental settlements were newly introduced.

Even Anno 1404 received good reviews from specialized magazines. Metacritic calculated a meta-rating of 82 points. Testers praised the fact that the game builds on the strengths of 1701 and comes up with numerous new functions that avoid any monotony later in the game.

Board games

In spring 2007 Anno 1701 - Das Kartenspiel was published . In the autumn of the same year, Anno 1701 - Das Brettspiel followed . Both games were designed by Klaus Teuber and are similar to the games in the Settlers of Catan series. As in the Anno 1701 template, the players try to build a settlement. In both implementations, the aim of the game is to collect as many Favor Points as possible, which are available for the development of your own city.

Novel about the game

In August 2007 the novel Anno 1701 - Kampf um Roderrenge was presented at the Games Convention in Leipzig . It was written by Claudia Kern and tells the story of the young man Jon. Jon is a pirate who hires on a merchant ship to steal a treasure chest. When the ship gets into a storm and the captain Marten von Rallingen is fatally wounded, he takes over his role. Shortly afterwards the ship sinks. Jon is saved and taken to Rallingen's island of Roderrenge. There he decided to expand the settlement, which was impoverished under the rule of the real von Rallingen, and to advance it. The novel was published on September 13, 2007 by the Italian publisher Panini .
