Anno 1602 is the first computer game from the Anno series . The game was created from a joint project between the Austrian company Max Design and the German company Sunflowers . The game was sold over 2 million times by January 2002, making it the best-selling game developed in German-speaking countries.

Gameplay

The player is taken back to the year 1602 , where he has the task of discovering and colonizing a previously unexplored island world. At the beginning of the game, the player has a share capital, a small amount of raw materials ( wood , tools and food ) and a sailing ship. With the ship he can navigate through the island world and navigate to and colonize the island that seems most suitable for a settlement.

In the endless mode, the island world is populated by some villages with "indigenous people" and depending on the set difficulty level, pirates attack the player, start fires, drought periods destroy the crops or the plague kills the people. Depending on the skill of the player, the inhabitants of his settlements develop from pioneers to settlers , citizens , merchants and ultimately to aristocrats .

Depending on the stage of development reached, the residents of the cities demand various luxury goods such as fabric , alcohol , tobacco , spices , cocoa , clothing and jewelry in addition to basic necessities . At the same time, in order to reach the next stage of development, it is necessary to erect certain structures, some of which are very costly, such as taverns, schools , churches , bathhouses , medical practices, universities and theaters . In return, the player can claim all the more taxes , the further the development of the inhabitants has advanced and the happier the population is. In addition, the player can build a cathedral, a castle and, as soon as one has defeated an opponent, a triumphal arch.

Complex economic relationships are conveyed in the game. So the player must constantly observe the following points:

  • Balance status (tax revenue, income from trading, operating costs of our own production facilities)
  • Satisfaction of the population (supply of the necessary necessities and luxury goods)
  • Development of the population (supply of building materials, food, tax burden)

With computer opponents or online opponents, trade and diplomacy can be pursued, but war can also be waged . The war component in the game, however, is not very extensive and as detailed as the rest of the game, or even as in strategy games. However, this was intended by the manufacturer, as the game should be based mainly on trade and diplomacy.

Extensions

  • Anno 1602 - New Islands, New Adventures : Expansion with map editor (released November 12, 1998)
  • Anno 1602 - In the Name of the King : Expansion (released November 30, 1998)
  • Trade War: The Big Adventure Package for Anno 1602 : Unofficial expansion by Data Becker (Release: 1998)

Trivia

  • The relatively simple coding of the score data meant that the format was cracked shortly after it was published and the corresponding algorithm was publicly known. As a result, a flood of hobby editors sprang up before the official editor expansion was even released.
  • The German pop group Die Prinzen lent the residents their voices in the expansion New Islands, New Adventures in a separate scenario. The symbols of the population levels (pioneers, settlers, etc.) were also replaced by the portraits of the band members. In the installation directory of the audio files you can also find outtakes or alternative dubbings that cannot be heard in the game.
