Karl Rudolf Sillib (born February 27, 1869 in Mannheim , † October 23, 1946 in Badenweiler ) was a German librarian and regional historian of Baden . He was head of the Heidelberg University Library from 1922 to 1934 and since 1924 honorary professor of books and librarianship.

Working life

After graduating from the Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Mannheim , Sillib studied history and economics in Heidelberg, Berlin and Greifswald from 1887 . In 1892 he received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg , where he started a career as a librarian. In 1893 he began as a volunteer at the university library, a year later he was "Extraordinary Laborer" and in 1896 "Permanent Laborer" with the title of custodian . In 1902 he was promoted to librarian, in 1908 to professor and in 1920 to senior librarian.

On April 1, 1922, Sillib succeeded Jakob Wille as head library director of Heidelberg University Library, an office that he held until 1934. He was the third professional librarian to head this institution, having previously been head of the manuscript department since 1915. In 1924 he received a teaching position for books and librarianship at the University of Heidelberg as an honorary professor. On May 31, 1934, Sillib was given retirement age, but continued in office until September.

During Sillib's tenure in 1924, the catalog rules were summarized in a written set of rules. He tightened and reorganized the administration of the library through the introduction of a system of specialist presentations, acquisition conferences and other measures. Supported by the (German) Emergency and Research Foundation , he expanded the special collection areas of archeology and art history . In 1933 the first Heidelberg magazine directory was published in book form.

The Nazi Sillib has opposed any resistance. After Gustav Radbruch's dismissal , he immediately withdrew his privileges at the university, a decision that was reversed by the ministry.

Sillib was an extraordinary member of the Baden Historical Commission and a member of the library committee of the (German) Research Foundation from 1912 onwards . He was also a member and since 1932 chairman of the Baden Advisory Board for Library Affairs.

1908–1911 the librarian was honorary curator of the municipal collections in Heidelberg . Until his appointment as library director, he was also the “caretaker of art and antiquity monuments for the Heidelberg district” from 1908. In 1929 he was still chairman of the university archives .

From 1928 to 1935 he was the editor of the magazine for the history of the Upper Rhine (ZGO).

Sillib was with Gertrud geb. Glatz (1881–1951) married. The couple had a daughter. His father was a merchant. - In 1901, the librarian was the builder and first resident of the representative villa at Kussmaulstrasse 10 in Neuenheim.
