Armin Schlechter looks at the Codex Manesse

Armin Schlechter (born April 11, 1960 in Heidelberg ) is a German librarian and Germanist . From 1996 to November 2007 he was head of the manuscripts and old prints department of the Heidelberg University Library and moved to the Palatinate State Library in Speyer in the same function on April 1, 2008 .

Live and act

Worse studied at the University of Heidelberg German Studies, Medieval Latin and medieval and modern history and was in 1991 at Lothar Voetz Dr. phil. PhD. Then he worked for a few years as a research assistant at the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe . After completing his traineeship in the library from 1994 to 1996 at the Heidelberg University Library and the Library School in Frankfurt am Main, he became a library assessor in 1996, a library councilor in 1998 and a senior library councilor at the Heidelberg university library in 2000. From 1996 to the end of 2007 he was head of the manuscripts and old prints department with around 80,000 volumes. During this time, the cataloging and digitization of the Codices Palatini germanici as well as the rebuilding of the rarity collection began. He was also responsible for the bequests kept in the library and the annual exhibitions, each accompanied by richly illustrated catalogs. From December 2007 he was scientific director of the project for cataloging the Codices Salemitani at the Heidelberg University Library. Schlechter is also a lecturer at the German Department of Heidelberg University and a member of the Commission for Historical Regional Studies in Baden-Württemberg . His academic work focuses on the history of books and libraries in southwest Germany and the Heidelberg Romanticism.

In 2005 Armin Schlechter published a find in the exhibition catalog Die edel kunst der truckerey that he had made while working on incunabula. In a handwritten marginal note in an incunable with the letters of friend from Cicero , Agostino Vespucci , employee of the Florence office and friend of Machiavelli , mentions three works by Leonardo da Vinci , including a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo . The entry, dated October 1503, is an important indication that the painting of the Mona Lisa preserved today in the Louvre is actually a portrait of the aforementioned merchant's wife. The find, published for the second time in November 2007, received worldwide press coverage in January 2008. An essay in English on this complex was most recently published in 2010.

At the end of November 2007, Armin Schlechter was deprived of the management of the manuscript department, which also published the find without consulting him. Although numerous specialist scientists related themselves for Schlechter, the university administration refused to give him any support.

In the Palatinate State Library, which is part of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Library Center, Armin Schlechter has been responsible for the old holdings since April 1, 2008, with the exception of English studies. Under his leadership, exhibitions on the house's bindings, the geophysicist Georg von Neumayer and the Vormärz politician Johann Georg August Wirth were prepared, each with scientific catalogs.
