Codices Palatini germanici (older spelling: Codices Palatini Germani , technical name: Cod. Pal. Germ. , Abbreviation: Cpg ) are the German-language manuscripts from the former Bibliotheca Palatina in Heidelberg. There are 848 codices that are now kept in the Heidelberg University Library - the fourth largest collection of medieval German manuscripts after Berlin, Munich and Vienna.

Particularly noteworthy is the large proportion of books on medicine and alchemy, the special preferences of the Palatinate electors. This group consists of 298 volumes. Other holdings: 235 volumes on theology, 120 on history, calendars, form and family records, 100 literature, 30 astrology, 20 law, 20 war and fireworks books.

history

During the Thirty Years War , the manuscripts and prints of the Bibliotheca Palatina were brought to the Vatican Apostolic Library in Rome. Most of them were reintegrated there, rearranged and given the signatures that are still valid today. The latter was probably carried out around 1675 by Augustine Grimanus, who was a scribe for Hebrew, Latin and German.

As a result of the Congress of Vienna returned in 1816 , the 847 German manuscripts in the Palatinate back and have since been kept in Heidelberg. The manuscript cpg 848, the world-famous Codex Manesse , did not come to Germany until 1888 from the Paris Royal Library , where it was kept for 230 years. Most of the Latin manuscripts (Codices Palatini latini or cpl for short) as well as the printed volumes are still in Rome today. Only the codices with the call numbers 52 (Otfried handwriting), 454, 1735, 1854 and 1912 (four volumes on university history) returned to Heidelberg in 1816.

Friedrich Wilken obtained the first list of the returned manuscripts the following year. Further catalogs come from Karl Bartsch (1887), Jakob Wille (1903) and Hans Wegener (1927). During the Second World War, the manuscripts were stored in different locations, most recently in a salt mine, where they survived the end of the war unscathed. Between 1961 and 1963 130 volumes were restored, ink and paint damage was removed and damaged bindings repaired.
