Final Fantasy XV (OT: Japanese フ ァ イ ナ ル フ ァ ン タ ジ ー XV , Fainaru Fantajī Fifutīn ) is a Japanese action role-playing game from Square Enix that was released worldwide on November 29, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . The game was initially announced as Final Fantasy Versus XIII as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis , but was renamed at E3 2013. It is the fifteenth part of the Final Fantasy series and the second with German voice output. It is further different from previous installments in the main series in that it is supposed to be darker, provide a more realistic setting, and feature a smaller party.

Final Fantasy XV takes place in the world of Eos . All nations, except for the Kingdom of Lucis, are ruled by the Niflheim Empire. Niflheim also takes advantage of the peace negotiations to take Lucis. The protagonist and heir to the throne of Lucis, Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum, then wants to free the kingdom. It is an open world game with an action-heavy combat system similar to that of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy Type-0 .

The game didn't appear until about ten years after it was first announced. The development took a very long time, so that one can speak of vaporware and development hell. Initially, Tetsuya Nomura was the director of Final Fantasy Versus XIII , now Final Fantasy XV . In 2014, however, Hajime Tabata took over the management. The plot was expanded and under the project title "Final Fantasy XV Universe", the anime series Brotherhood: Final Fantasy , which takes place before the events of Final Fantasy XV , and the animated film Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV were also released . The film deals with the background of Regis and details of the Niflheim invasion from the perspective of the character Nyx Ulric. There are also the games A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV (PlayStation 4, Xbox One) and Justice Monsters Five ( Windows , iOS , Android ).

action

Game world

The story of Final Fantasy XV takes place in the world of Eos. This is divided into the nations Lucis, Tenebrae, Niflheim, Solheim and Accordo. All nations except Niflheim once had magical crystals, but wars have lost all but Lucis' crystal. Lucis formed a society in which magic plays an important role, while Niflheim relies on technology and machines. At the beginning of FFXV , all nations except Lucis are under the rule of Niflheim. Furthermore, the world is threatened by the plague of the stars, through which the world threatens to sink into eternal darkness. Only oracles can stop this phenomenon.

Characters

Final Fantasy XV's protagonist , Noctis Lucis Caelum, is the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Lucis. He is the playable character and is always accompanied and supported by his friends Ignis Scientia, Gladiolus Amicitia and Prompto Argentum.

The party of four can be supported temporarily by Cor Leonis, one of Lucis' best fighters and close confidante of King Regis. The same applies to Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, princess of the Tenebrae kingdom, oracle and fiancee of Noctis. After the attack from Niflheim on Lucis, she fled to Altissia.

history

When a peace treaty between the kingdoms of Lucis and Niflheim is about to be signed one day, Iedolas Aldercapt, the ruler of Niflheim, takes this opportunity to remove the magical barrier of the Lucian capital, Insomnia, so that his army attacks the city and the crystal of the city is in his power can bring. King Regis Lucis Caelum is pronounced dead. Noctis was on the way to Altissia with his friends, where he was supposed to marry Lunafreya Nox Fleuret as part of the peace treaty.

Noctis and his group are in the Duscae region at the time of the attack on Insomnia. In the process, however, their car suffers a great deal of damage, so they take it to the mechanic Cidney. After the car is repaired, they head to Altissia to find Lunafreya.

development

The development of Final Fantasy XV began shortly before its announcement at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in May 2006, along with Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII . The game was originally announced as Final Fantasy Versus XIII for the PlayStation 3 as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis .

After the release date was set for September 30, 2016 at the Final Fantasy XV Uncovered event , Hajime Tabata announced in August 2016 that the release would be postponed to November 29. The reason for this is that the game is already finished, but there would be a large so-called "Day 1 Patch" and many players who did not have their console connected to the Internet would not get the best possible gaming experience. This would violate the self-imposed goal. Therefore, the release was postponed by two months.

Nevertheless, the developer announced in a press release on November 21, 2016 that it would publish a seven gigabyte “Day 1 Patch” called “Crown Update”.

In 2018, in addition to the Royal Edition , which includes all of the game content that has been published so far, including some additional content, a version for Windows was also announced. The latter includes all the features of the console versions including some technologies that are exclusive for the PC platform, such as 8K support, HDR and Dolby Atmos . Both versions were released on March 6, 2018.

As of November 2018, 8.4 million copies of the game had been sold.
